About this listen

Just say know! With drug education for children more important than ever, this nonfiction book draws on the experiences of the New York Times best-selling father-and-son team of David and Nic Sheff to provide all the information teens and 'tweens need to know about drugs, alcohol, and addiction.

From David Sheff, author of Beautiful Boy, and Nic Sheff, author of Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, comes the ultimate resource for learning about the realities of drugs and alcohol for middle-grade listeners.

This book tells it as it is, with testimonials from peers who have been there and families who have lived through the addiction of a loved one, along with the cold, hard facts about what drugs and alcohol do to our bodies. From how to navigate peer pressure to outlets for stress to the potential consequences for experimenting, Nic and David Sheff lay out the facts so that middle grade readers can educate themselves.

Number-one Amazon.com best seller in Children's Substance Abuse Books.

It was good to hear this success story all these years later. Great insights and lessons learned for parents and young people alike. The opiod epidemic is still going strong. Knowledge and education about it and other drugs is so important . Beautiful Boy written by David Sheff about his son and the affect it had on their family was gut wrenching but it also was an inspiration to me at a time I felt the same desperation with my child. I had no idea how to handle my situation after many failed efforts. When I was feeling hopeless I found David’s method of no contact unless the addict was willing to get help finally gave me a tool to become stronger and stop enabling even though the risk could have been death. The emotional and physical toll on a parent with that kind of decision is indescribable. Luckily my story ended successfully. We need to keep talking, keep learning and keep sharing. Never give up. Keep on loving. This book does just that. Thank you fir sharing your success and insights.

I really enjoyed how the book provided current information about addiction and SUD’s from the perspective of people who had first hand experience with them. The information is credible and will hopefully help people understand what happens neurologically and epigenetically for folks who become addicted.

Informative and compassionate

If you’re expecting a wholly sympathetic character, you will be disappointed. If you’re expecting tight, literary prose, you may be disappointed. If you want a raw, honest memoir, this will hold your attention even when you’re thinking “argh, Nic!! Are you kidding!?” It is an interesting account of the rationalization of addicts and redemption.

Even Better Than “Tweak”

This was a great book! It was informative on all the reasons why some people can drink and others can not. Knowing these risks before its too late helps to prevent it from happening in our teens.
Arming people with information and knowledge is the best medicine!
Thank you for writing this book!

This book is very helpful as it gives insight into the mind of an addict as well as the neurological and social damage drugs can have on people. This book also give one hope for better and a greater appreciation for life. It also sheds light on beautiful a father and son relationship which is envied upon as well as inspirational.

I thought this was a book towards the general public. But really it’s a book geared towards children that are at risk or using drugs. For a kid, it’s probably great. Listening as an adult, it felt juvenile and a bit of fear mongering.

Not what I thought

As an addict, I know this story all too well. However, it doesn't bore you with details on the physics of addiction; but it gives you insight into how an addict feels both in the throes of addiction, as well as recovery. I highly recommend this book.
