About this listen

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age 11. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise.

In writing that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself.

You can also hear Nic's father's perspective in his memoir: Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey through His Son's Meth Addiction.©2007 Nic Sheff (P)2008 Blackstone Audio, Inc.

This book is very descriptive and gives many details of the trials of drug addiction but I wouldn’t recommend it for YA due to the language and sometimes sexually graphic details. I do Recommend reading his father’s book as well to see of their points of view of Nic’s addiction.

Shouldn’t be considered YA Fiction

This has been a really great book to listen to while working during quarantine. It’s not an action movie per se, with loads of drama. It just feels more real, and the narrator voice is great and relaxing to. This was also good to listen to during workouts to keep my heart rate stabile.

Great to listen to

If you want a long, heart wrenching, sad, loving and overall great story. Read this. Nic’s story puts you in his head and the play by play is phenomenal. Wow, I felt like I was there the entire time.

I read David Sheff’s book first, and it was nice getting both perspectives. I found David’s to be more heartfelt, but maybe that’s because I’m a parent. I think this book would’ve been more effective had it been read by someone closer to Nic’s age; this sounded like it was being read by an English teacher.

Needed a different narrator

A great read! First and foremost I really like who read this book. He really made the characters come alive, he even changes his tone of voice when he reads what each character is saying. The author did a really good job at painting the picture to describe his story and what he went through. It paints it in your head like you were a fly on the wall!¡!! I also like that it was a longer type book because you can really grasp the ups and downs of Nicc Sheff’s memoir story you felt his high highs and his low lows!! I am beyond grateful this book was included with my subscription. I literally couldn’t put this book down I listened for hours at a time really getting into character. Nic Sheff allows that with his writing and he’s able to do that because it’s a lengthy book so don’t be discouraged that it’s a longer read I promise you won’t be disappointed. I sure A’s hell wasn’t¡!¡!¡!¡! 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️’s

Nic Sheff has a way with words when telling his story he really paints a phenomenal vivid picture
