About this listen

The world is infested with demons, vampires, and ghosts who clash with wizards on the fringes of society. Faced with these horrors, there's only one thing a small-time wizard can do: absolutely nothing. Doing something could get a man killed.

Armed only with a modern view of magic, a snarky bloodthirsty apprentice, and no concept of the phrase "fair fight", Maker is far too weak to try and change the world. But when a new group of warlocks moves into the area with the goal of making his life more interesting, Maker will find sitting on the bench is easier said than done.

hopefully first of many

Loved it! I don't read much fiction but breezed right through this one. Great narration, interesting characters , good mix of action gore and humor. Would love to hear what these characters get up to next!

Spellbinding !

Jester Bobbity is a masterful wordsmith. He creates a compelling character in Maker who narrates with such a matter of fact sensibility and a fresh off beat sense of humor that I felt as if I knew him. The plot is a wild ride of mage fights and epic vampire versus wizard battles. Maker's sidekick, Zora, is a strong heroine who relishes her life as full time wizard protector for Maker. Bobbity has built Maker's world around his private magic potion sales office.

His spells and potions are sometimes real and sometimes a placebo, which is decided according to Maker's pointed life philosophy.

His private practice is a front for the real magic working to uphold the order in society.

I can't wait for Book 2. I want to get to know Maker's bloodline and origin before he gets mixed up in magic.

What new threats will put society at risk and demand that Maker and Zora free our world from the clutches of evil?

Pretty damn cool!

Self deprecating, violent, and funny, Maker was a wonderful companion on my morning commute. The story has a ton of imagination, a nicely drawn world that is totally believable. The narrator's personality shone through as he inhabited the main character. I could almost smell the ozone during the battles. Hey, Bobbity, how about another!

great

I look forward to listening this book every time I can. I'll be sad when it is over. Why am I hooked? It is not easy to say.

The MC Maker is one of my favorites, Zora is a close second. Miles is fully fleshed out for a small side character. Duke is interesting. Rollo is not bad. Neka...well the mystery of who and what he really is... I'm hooked. All the characters add to the story, none detract. No annoying romance to spoil from this very listenable action tale. Also, I like the introspection. Nice, no...very good world building.

I enjoy the narrator, perfect choice. The delivery is worth listening instead of reading.

I hope there is another audiobook in this Series. And soon.

Different done well

I always concerned when someone tells me about a first time author. I couldn't find anything else by "Jester Bobbity," but I took a chance anyway cause one of the reviews says it's a pen name. Maybe Stephen King is trying something new and doesn't want me to know? So I said meh, it's just one credit, right?
Maker is one of the more interesting characters I've encountered, even at first glance:

"I can light a candle with magic. I can make a gust of wind that would make Marilyn Munroe blush but nothing more than that."
How does a wizard that weak get anything done?! I yelled at my car radio. I stuck around a couple chapters just to get the answer to that question and by the time I did, I was like "Whoa! I'm in love!"

Jester Bobbity’s banter and humor is woven through a story with, great battles, intelligent magic building, awesome characters, intense action, and depth.
The longer I listened, the more I wanted to and I was still excited by the time it was over.

I went looking for the next book in the series even though I'd looked already and didn’t find one so I’m hoping the "author" continues. I don't care who you are Bobbity. Get me a part two! :)

Do not be fooled by the hokey cover!

It's Time for an Ambush is an awesome urban fantasy. Well rounded characters, with excellent world building and magical rules that make the actions and interactions believable. The writing is polished and flows smoothly, which makes me suspect Jester Bobbity is a pen name for a previously published author. Possibly breaking into a new genre? As the story continued I became more and more convinced of that. It's solid writing throughout with none of the tropes and cliches that are typical in a new author as they're refining their craft. There's a few blips that make me think they're not American either. Most of the dialog and interactions are accurate, but Maker comments about adding a certain skill to his CVV instead of his resume for one. And did I mention it's very entertaining? Wow. Strap in an hold on. You're thrust into Maker's world, a wizard of weak abilities, out gunned and over matched in all his encounters, yet his intelligent utilization of his limited skills coupled with his cleverness and street savvy make him a formidable opponent. Maker stands on his own two feet, unique and refreshing in the urban fantasy genre, but if you had to make a comparison to other series out there, you could say he's a mash up of Harry Dresden and John Constantine with a dash of North Carolina hot sauce.

Darryle Johnson's narration is very good too. I should add I was on the fence at first. Zora is his weakest characterization and does not sound like a female. The exchanges between Maker and Zora at the start of the story blended together, so it was hard to tell who was saying what, but as the story progressed the other character's accents and delivery are distinct and vivid. Further into the story Zora still doesn't sound very female, but she stands out in her interactions with Maker now.

Bottom line. This is _great_ story, very satisfying and I'm happy I stumbled upon it and gave it a try. I sincerely hope it will continue into a series.

Love Love Love

This book was great in every way. I love the world building, the characters are great, the magic system is believable and despite having magic the main character is as cynical as the rest of us.

I can't say enough good things about this book and I'd recommend to anyone.
