About this listen

As the medpod continues to repair his time-ravaged body in the real world, Colonel Raytak’s foes inside the game world of Limitless Lands execute their carefully-laid schemes, seeking his ruin. Wrongfully accused of treason, Raytak finds himself a prisoner of the Imperium he serves.

To clear his name, Raytak is forced to fight in the arena, seeking victory in the Emperor’s Grand Melee to earn his freedom…but he can’t do it alone. To win, he must forge brutal prisoners, cowards, and deserters into a fighting force capable of conquering every gladiatorial team standing in his way.

Meanwhile, an ancient threat stirs in Hayden’s Knoll and the zone is left unprotected in Raytak’s absence.

Will Raytak be able to regain his freedom and his honor? Will the new threat destroy the zone before he can return to fight it?

Much improved!

Out of the 3 books I believe the third book to be my favorite, or at least as good as the first. Dean Henegar has a way of making the world feel like it is still in motion while Raytek (MC) is doing his own thing. Raytek is falsely accuse of being a traitor and sent for trial to the Imperial Capital. On his way to the capital, Raytek is sold to perform as a gladiator and promised that if he does well he may be able to regain his freedom. Rayteks friends are not standing idly by, however. The rest of the group is looking to help clear Raytek's name by finding out who was actually behind the events prior to his arrest. I think what had me more interested in this book over the first and second book is that there were a lot less boardroom meetings. I liked hearing about the games progression and the work done on the med pods, but the voice acting here was very distracting and the british accent pulled me out of the story. That is why this book not including such scenes made the experience more pleasurable. On top of this, Jack Voraces sounds like he has become more versatile in his voices.

Great addition despite a rushed ending

coming to book three I am already very invested in the series and the journey. I loved the coliseum / gladiatorial aspect of the story and it was handled very well. The section of the novel at the end where they battle for hold fast, felt very rushed though. it felt as if that could have been the opening story arc of the next book and given more time to be flushed out, but they just dove straight into the action and defeated them handedly. otherwise this book was fantastic and did a great job of continuing the series and story

Ending is lacking, narration lost me

The story was pleasant. Definitely took some cues from the movie, Gladiator (2008). I enjoyed it until the ending that I zoned out. This foe that was built up over the course of a few chapters served only as a last road block that ultimately held no consequence. I would have preferred them to have had a larger role in the next book, but I won't be continuing the series due to my qualms with the narration.

After the first 2 books in the series, I enjoyed the fresh concept of a recovering veteran in a fantasy world so I was able to dismiss the narration quality. Due to my losing interest in the final act of the story, I noticed how much I was bothered by the narration. I did not really enjoy the voices used for Yendis and other characters as they were very harsh characterizations (which is actually fine when it comes to antagonists). There were also several mispronunciations as a result of the narrator's accent but it just bothers me too much. It comes down to personal preference so if any prospective listeners read this, the story itself is definitely worth listening to.

It gets even BETTER!!!

I really enjoyed the twist the story took and was happy with how it played out. it was very much like a side quest that pulled the character temporarily from the main story quest. The main character is some one whom you root for the whole ride.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Practically perfect!!!!

Let me start with my only issue with this book, which is a SPOILET ALERT!!! The only issue I had. and am worried about, is the seeming dependence by the author on enemies that spread like an infection and can somewhat blend in to achieve that. The ghouls used that last book, and this book it was the Galdog(spelling?). It comes off as potentially getting lazy with antagonist creation. I worry because this book obviously ends with the implication for the next book that the commune student will probably get her stuff taken over by the daughter turned master that escaped. One thing I've enjoyed about this series has been solid resolution at the end, and this potential recycling of an antagonistic force has huge potential to he a turn off for the next book.
ON TO THE GOOD STUFF! WOW, I am blown away by how good the plot of this book was! The handling of how Raytak was framed and earned his way back, and the bonuses on top were great! I am a little surprise he wasn't given some free base upgrades since its obvious now a foreign power has plans for invasion, but he didn't go back empty handed! I am excited to see his continued development, and potential loot similar to what his friends received! I can't imagine what a legendary item or other boon would look like for him, but I don't doubt the author will come up with something! Character development and creation is a HUGE strong point for the author, and the vocal performance by Jack is amazing every book! I think one thing I'd love to see is Raytak and his troops have a solid string of being the overwhelming, overpowering force they are definitely trained to be. Letting them deal with a force that isn't expecting their power and can't stand against them would be great to see. The only other thing that would be good to see would be return of some previous characters (what is the ex leader of chaotic outcomes up to, maybe she and the assassin can end up joining up with or helping Raytak). Also would've loved to see the punishment the field inspector received (and not him somehow getting out of it).
All in all, definitely my favorite series right now!

“Page Turner”

I am surprised with the amount of detail that has been thought out in this series. Henegar continues to keep my attention as I blaze through these books in the real world and Limitless Lands. I wasn’t able to put the first 2 books down and this continues the streak. Love the different voices and effects for the characters and makes them even more endearing to me.
