About this listen

Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott's most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War. It is no secret that Alcott based Little Women on her own early life.

While her father, the freethinking reformer and abolitionist Bronson Alcott, hobnobbed with such eminent male authors as Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne, Louisa supported herself and her sisters with "woman's work," including sewing, doing laundry, and acting as a domestic servant. But she soon discovered she could make more money writing. Little Women brought her lasting fame and fortune, and far from being the "girl's book" her publisher requested, it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America.

Beautiful classic

I loved this book! I really wish I would have read it sooner. It is a great love story. The narrator also does a beautiful job of telling the story.

Just like Lousia’s Book

The narrator did quite a splendid job of bringing out the beautiful language and daily toils of life that this precious little book presents.

Lovely reading but with British accent

I enjoyed the reading and interpretation, but the story takes on a different timbre with a British narrator.

Faded in and out

The performance was fine; however, at times the volume faded a bit making for challenging listening.

Poor production

The reader is great, but unfortunately she got a very bad producer. The sound volume goes up and down so I’m constantly adjusting it to be able to hear or to keep from getting blasted. Also, words and phrases are repeated like two sound clips were not edited correctly together. It draws away from the story and reading and made me want to stop and purchase a different edition. There’s a reason it’s only $0.71.

Truths that are true today as was back then!

Okay, the sound on this recording is deplorable. It spoils such a wonderful tale.
I read this as a child, and now, some 60 years later, look back and see the mirror of events in the lives of myself and those around me.
For those that believe that the "classics" are outdated, truly do not understand that some stories are lessons, no matter what age you live in.

This is the one to buy

Are you an adult, wishing to revisit a childhood favorite? Perhaps in company with your child or grandchild, or just relaxing with a feline/canine companion? Your search through all the narrations of Little Women is done.

I have tried sooooooo many narrations of this classic. A lot of narrators speak in a nauseatingly sweet voice which is totally inappropriate for a book that broke conventions to realistically describe young adulthood. Then there are the accents. No, Virginia. The Alcotts did not speak like a Midwest DJ. They lived in Massachusetts during a time when regional accents were pronounced. OK I’m still waiting for an authentic Bostonian accent (eg the original Parent Trap) but this is a good substitute. The narrator has done her homework and the different accents are authentic. As for the March girls, their voices are spot on with respect to personality and age: Amy sounds appropriately childish, Meg sounds like a young women on the verge of adulthood, etc. And given the cost, especially if you purchase the kindle version first, it’s a steal.
