About this listen

The first novella set in the universe of James S. A. Corey's epic Captive's War series.

Humanity's war is eternal, spread across the galaxy and the ages. Humanity's best hope to end the endless slaughter is the Livesuit forces. Soldiers meld their bodies to the bleeding edge technology, becoming something more than human for the duration of a war that might never end.

James A. Corey weaves believable characters and group interactions together like Tarantino. This novella hits a nerve at the intersection of the honor of military service and what it takes from you. I’m very much looking forward to reading more in the captives war series.

I don't review most books I read. So let me start by saying this is far above average. It is both interesting and poignant.

I was thinking it was a full length book when I purchased it, but it is in fact a short story only a couple hours long. It was well done and thoughtful. It really didn't need to be longer. It really makes you think.

When I say it was good I don't mean it was good for science fiction, I mean it was good for any genre. It was probably the best short story I have read since "The Egg" by Andy Weir.

Definitely worth reading. I'm glad I have it in my collection.

Surprising Good

I'm left wondering what I would do if I was the character in this story. To realize that everything the livesuit wearer are hoping for\dreaming of is a lie.

Haunting Ending

This book will probably haunt me, but it also got me to buy the first book of the series.

well told, honest, & depressing

I enjoyed this story, and I think this was an excellent first Novella in the new series. But honestly, it’s the most for me is Anderson Mays’ narration. If it is an expanse or an expanse, adjacent audiobook, it has to be narrated by Anderson Mays. He brings the life to these characters as much, so if not more than, the pages do.

Anderson Mays for the win

I loved how they managed to compress a complete story into this shorter work. The livesuit idea is fascinating and they play with it in several ways. It echoes other books like "Old Man's War" but has a unique feel, particularly since it leverages the aliens developed in the prior book (The Mercy of Gods) and it goes deep into biology and the grim details of the war and the combatants on both sides. I did not regret spending an entire credit on this shorter listen, and that's high praise.

Captured my attention despite being a short listen

This was beautifully written and heartbreaking. A great addition to this series. Four and a half stars.

The writing and prose is great. The main character name Kirin was also likable and relatable. But the ending was both shocking and haunting at the same time. I might never forget. I give this novella 5 stars.

Really terrifying.
