Publisher's summary

Deception, passion, and love collide in this bewitching novel in New York Times best-selling author Lisa Kleypas’ wildly popular Hathaway series

Beatrix Hathaway would much rather spend time with her collection of rescued animals than flirting in a stuffy ballroom. If her unconventional behavior earns the mockery of handsome rakes like Captain Christopher Phelan, so be it. She’d rather stay true to herself, even if it means never finding love.

Christopher’s courtship of Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious but flighty Prudence Mercer, is interrupted when his regiment is sent to fight in the Crimea. After a particularly devastating battle, he writes a letter to Prudence, unaware that the spoiled beauty has decided she doesn’t want to wait for him. Since Prudence won’t reply to the world-weary soldier, Beatrix offers to write a letter for her - and she signs it as Pru. A lively, witty correspondence begins, and gradually turns into something deeper as they share the secrets of their hearts.

To Beatrix’s despair, she’s fallen for a man who thinks she’s someone else, and she’ll never be able to reveal her deception. Christopher, now a decorated hero, comes back to claim the woman he loves. Soon, however, he realizes Prudence is very different from her letters...and he’s bewildered by his inexplicable attraction to the eccentric Beatrix Hathaway....

Great story

The characters were excellent, found myself laughing out loud and smiling throughout the book. The steam was just okay, Grace Callaway is an excellent writer in that department but overall the story was pretty good but not too much in-depth when it came to pru. Good job

Lovely Read

A wonderful ending to the Hathaway series. The story and characters were very relatable. Bea was always a favorite, and it serves her justice to find a wounded soul to heal.

Beatrix Hathaway-Love the Character!

The Hathaways are an interesting and delightful family. Beatrix is the quirkiest of the group. It was fun listening to this book. The story line kept my interest throughout with a surprise ending that perhaps will lead to another book! Rosalyn Landor's narration was excellent as always. Thank you Lisa Kleypas for bringing us more listening entertainment.

Best of the Hathaway’s stories

Beatrix was still herself while also being grown up, which was something i thought might be awkward but wasn’t at all. Characters grew, the casts from other stories made helpful appearances that let us see how all were still evolving. I especially liked how Beatrix still made mistakes without appearing silly or ‘stupid.’ Characters were very relatable even if Christopher was almost too perfectly patient.
A very enjoyable end to the series.

The best book of the series

This was giving because of miss bridgerton and when he was wicked by Julia Quinn the full way through. Easily the best book of the series, which improves as you move through the novels.
