About this listen

My name is Danica James. I'm a cop with the Arcane Division.

Most mages have the ability to manipulate the elements - fire, water, air, earth, electricity. My magic only works on machines and electrical devices. They call me a magitek. That doesn't help much with demons and vampires, let alone criminals with lethal magikal powers.

Contains mature themes.

Good start

Overall fast paced, lots of action urban fantasy. A good first in series and world building. Sometimes the story gets bogged down with too much detailed explAnations but overall good.

Great story building

I enjoyed this book more that Kingsolvers other books. I find the other books 4 stars and this is a 5 star book. I liked that the MC's best friend was actually a good friend and her partner was a good and helpful work partner. I've read too many books lately where both were rude, jealous and judgemental of anything involving the MC. How is that supposed to be entertaining? I do like conflict in a book and this had a lot of that where it is supposed to be. The book is more adult than teen and the case involved is human trafficking, mostly teens. There is also some demon (soft) erotica but nothing graphic. This kept my attention. I laughed, gasped and was saddened. I looked forward to the next book in the series.

Love BR Kingsolver book and imagination

This book didn’t disappoint. I have listened to a number of her books and read them and really enjoyed this and can’t to see how it develops as we go forward. The characters are great but I really like the suspense and intrigue that is always apparent in her series.

Engaging beginning

Fast paced, fun start to the series. Good world building. Interesting story points left open without being a cliff hanger.

Interesting take on magic

I like the theory/story line of the book, the idea of magic and rifts are interesting - but the book itself was a little lacking for me. Right it’s free to listen with an audible membership so I listened though the whole story. The main character felt kind of cold to me, very matter of fact and sort of detached. The story around her / the world around her is totally interesting and kept my attention more than the main characters voice (not the narration - but tone the MC had in her thoughts). The ending was good and I liked how most things were sort of resolved in the book while others aren’t, giving a slight air of muster to the reader. I do want more passion from the MC (if I ever get around to listening to the next book) and am curious to see how this will all end - but not ‘spend a credit on the next book’ curious.

Excellent narration good start to a series

This was overall a pretty good book. I probably would give it 3.5 stars if it let me. The narration pushed it to 4. I liked the main character and the voice she was given through the reading and the story. I could tell that the writer reads ilona andrews and could see some similarities.
There are a few places that got confusing and I kept having to go back and reread part to figure out what is going on. I see potential and I would jump to pick up the next ones if they were a little longer or went on sale like this one. I hate to spend a credit on a book that is less than 10 hours and really struggle with spending it on one that is less than 8 hours.

Pleasantly surprising

Don't judge a book by its cover art.

I was kind of expecting a cookie-cutter bodice ripper in the style of urban fantasy. While there were SOME steam bits...The driving core of the story is definitely more a mystery that can cross into passions and the madness it can drive a suspect to. The lead struck me as distinctive and interesting, and I thought the setup for a longer, more over-reaching mystery across a series was well done. I'm looking forward to the next book more than I would have expected to what I grabbed for a 'guilty pleasure'.
