I don't start these kinds of books with a particularly high bar for expectations. I just want the writing to not feel awkward or forced. And this book toed that line from the start. I loved the initial concept of what an adventurer does when they can't adventure anymore and it didn't immediately jump to combat adjacent themes. But that was just the jumping off point for plot holes and a concerning/confusing timeline. It's not the unsaid love at first sight situation, that's common enough. But for someone to have paid that little attention to their deceased parents assets for years and to not know they had an additional property, which he only learns about after losing his job... That's too convenient of timing. Not actually having to pay anything for pounds of magic silver. Being worried about finances and then not having a care in the world when a second and third mouth to feed are brought into the picture. I can go on, but I think I made my point. There's too much convenience and not enough struggle. I'm all for a feel good story, and sometimes things just go well, but there's too much to find it believable. I also had an issue with the timeline, it's not very well explained over how long these events take place. These complaints being said, it's got a solid enough structure that I finished the book.

The narrator was fine for the most part. I just feel like she reached a bit beyond her range at times and slips into accents to really differentiate some characters. She did well enough with the material she's given though.

Overly simple and convenient

Poor choices and structure along with high repetition. The only real standout was the more beastly fork of the ladies but they seems like it is mostly skimmed over as well.

Mediocrity incarnate.

the story was good from what I heard but I couldn't finish the book cause I couldn't stand the narrator.

story? fine. narrator? no thanks.

The premise sold me immediately. Sometimes I don't want to read a book about saving the world, I just want to read something light with low stakes. This fits the bill perfectly. Ally Frey does a fantastic job narrating this book and I want to hear her more. Don't hesitate to give this audiobook a try.

Brilliant low stakes slice of life

To be honest I think I might be to use to harems narrated by a male and female. Don’t get me wrong. The story is great and I love the voice I just listened to the whole story expecting a male to home in for male characters. Otherwise heavy recommend listening.

Pretty good

The general concept is fine, I like these type of stories where someone gets to introduce a group of people to something we would consider common place, but the narration is drab at best. It sounds like she was just trying to get something over and done with, but worst part is that I can the inside of her mouth. I can hear her saliva! I just couldn't keep going after that.

I can hear the inside of her mouth!

Because that is the entirety of the depth of this book. Excruciating detail about making ice cream and I dont mean that as a euphemism....

Do you adore the idea of making ice cream?
