About this listen

Smart, edgy, hilarious, and unabashedly raunchy New York Times best-selling author Samantha Irby explodes in her uproarious first collection of essays.

Irby laughs her way through tragicomic mishaps, neuroses, and taboos as she struggles through adulthood: chin hairs, depression, bad sex, failed relationships, masturbation, taco feasts, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. Updated with her favorite Instagramable, couch-friendly recipes, this much-beloved romp is treat for anyone in dire need of Irby's infamous, scathing wit, and poignant candor.

Featured Article: Must-Hear Contemporary Black Women Authors

It’s a fact that a high percentage of the best books that have come out in this century have been written by Black women authors. (Truth be told, there are so many excellent works that this list could simply centered on the best contemporary authors and still be accurate.) Nevertheless, Black women’s stories deserve to be heard, and when the stories are this compelling, this engaging, and this beautifully written, they’re impossible to ignore.

Be prepared to laugh, unless you’re a super stiff lame-o

THIS BOOK.

My lawd, I have not laughed this hard in a long time. This book was curt, well-written & narrated and was waaaay too relatable. I’ve recommended it to every woman I know, and will keep doing so because everyone needs this in their life. Kthanxbye.

Hilariously honest

If you could sum up Meaty in three words, what would they be?

Hilarious, vulnerable, refelctive

What did you like best about this story?

Samantha Irby is brazenly unafraid to "go there". She shares harrowing moments of her life with a critical rawness but somehow still manages to make everything laugh-out-loud funny.

What about Samantha Irby’s performance did you like?

This is my second Samantha Irby audio and no one other then Sam should ever be allowed to perform her books.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I definitely made a few wrong turns while listening to this audiobook in my car because I was too distracted from laughing.

My favorite memoir of the year

I have a thing for memoirs, especially ones by comedians or bloggers. This is one of my all time favorites. I have read Samantha’s work since her early blog days and this collection of essays exemplifies her talent. I cried with laughter and then cried actual tears in the same chapter. Sam holds nothing back and hearing her narration is the best way to experience her work.

Fun and funny!

I bought this based on a published excerpt and expected to hear interesting perspectives. It isn't quite controversial, but definitely not mainstream. This was fun to listen to in my leisure time, and my partner enjoyed the parts she heard as well. It sparked great conversations and got me thinking on a number of subjects. It is very easy to listen to, and it helps that the author reads it herself, so every bit of her attitude comes through.

too many lists

honestly I love irby but this one had too many lists and "recipes" I was done 3/4 of the way into the book. "We are never meeting in real life" was way better!

Devastating and brilliant

I’ve all of Samantha Irby’s books out of order but it doesn’t matter. This one will hit you in the guts pretty good.

Self deprecation way over done

I get it, it’s funny. I enjoy it to a point, but I guess I’m not as big of a fan as I thought I was of Irby. She really hates on herself way too much and it made me really sad for her.

I love you, Sam Irby

Just here to say she rules. And makes me laugh harder than any writer out there right now.
Keep it coming!
