Publisher's summary

A girl comes of age with a vengeance - and help from a friend - in a tale of unnerving suspense from National Book Award winner and literary master Joyce Carol Oates.

Bad things have been happening since Mia began to mature. Her dad left. Boys at school can’t keep their hands to themselves. A lecherous stepfather has moved in. Her only refuge is an abandoned lot on her suburban cul-de-sac, crawling with feral felines - one of which follows Mia home. Ghostly white and affectionate, she is Mia’s new companion and - as Mia’s tormenters will soon discover - her fierce protector.

Joyce Carol Oates’s Miao Dao is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Scary

Heartbreaking tale of a childhood shattered. Joyce Carol Oates always makes me think, and I love that.

The fear grown from being sexual harassed

This is giving with a sastifying end though. Thoughts who may had trauma like this, the author makes it a great way to communicate how the pratogonist is feeling throughout.

powerful and heart-wrenching

i loved this story and performance. it really puts the listener in the girl's shoes. i love the thought of my cats waiting for the moment to attack to protect me. ultimately empowering and more than a bit odd in a good way. unique with detailed description.

Happy ending

I can’t believe I didn’t anticipate the ending - a pleasant surprise that good overcomes evil yet the innocence is lost nonetheless

excellent story, good characters

a tale of abuse and despair in the American suburbs. The focus is on a young adolescent growing up in a dysfunctional home.there are only two or three main characters but they are finely drawn and utterly believable. oates is a pro and knows exactly how to tell this simple but gripping tale. the narrator has trouble with male voices but it is not a serious problem.

this is the 3rd book in the "dark corners" series from Amazon that I've listened to and not a single one has disappointed.

Wonderful Work.

I am a cat lover. I was enthralled that it was about a cat. Ms Oates is not just a wonderful author, but a spectacular compiler. Her collection,
American Gothic Tales is a magnificent collection of Contemporary an Modern Stories all by American Authors.
