Publisher's summary

Growing up on Forge's streets has taught Kyra how to stretch a coin. And when that's not enough, her uncanny ability to scale walls and bypass guards helps her take what she needs. But when the leader of the Assassins Guild offers Kyra a lucrative job, she hesitates. She knows how to get by on her own, and she's not sure she wants to play by his rules. But he is persistent - and darkly attractive - and Kyra can't quite resist his pull. Tristam of Brancel is a young Palace knight on a mission. After his best friend is brutally murdered by the Demon Riders, a clan of vicious warriors who ride bloodthirsty wildcats, Tristam vows to take them down. But as his investigation deepens, he finds his efforts thwarted by a talented thief, one who sneaks past Palace defenses with uncanny ease.

When a fateful raid throws Kyra and Tristam together, the two enemies realize that their best chance at survival - and vengeance - might be to join forces. And as their loyalties are tested to the breaking point, they learn a startling secret about Kyra's past that threatens to reshape both their lives.

Good book

Really good book, not one of my top favorites, probably won't ever read it again.

Good book, not great

Any additional comments?

This book was pretty good, but not a favorite. It kept my attention and moved at a good pace. I liked that the main character was a reasonably strong female. There were three male characters in her life, but only a hint at romance. I wasn't crazy about the large wildcats in the story - that seemed a bit strange. I wouldn't look for the next book in the series because in the end I didn't care enough about the characters or their relationships. I don't regret listening to this book, but I wouldn't seek out another.

An amazing find

When I read the synopsis I was intrigued, but I liked this so much more than I thought I would. Sometimes when “creatures” are in books I find it childish or overdone and get burned out because I stop caring, but this was so well done and I was incredibly invested. I appreciate that the characters were very complex and it was hard to decide who to trust and even like. My opinion s kept changing which kept me invested.

A strong opening, and a very trope-filled finish

I will say that the initial set-up of this world was really interesting, and I got very excited. The characterization felt full, and the beginning interactions the characters had with one another was nuanced and clever.

And then... something happened... I'm not sure what, but suddenly all the characters became flat. And were suddenly only driven with single minded purpose. And then magic, and everything worked out. And near the end the book just started beating you over the head with tropes like "Unlike MOST girls-- she's COOL" "I've never liked girls, except YOU, you --unlike most females-- are SPECIAL"

I honestly can't finish the last 30 minutes even though I was enthralled with the beginning.
