From New York Times bestselling author of Archer’s Voice comes a second chance, childhood friends to lovers romance between a famous musician and the only woman he’s ever loved, perfect for fans of Colleen Hoover and Lucy Score.
The moment eleven-year-old Jessica Creswell met Callen Hayes, she knew he was a broken prince. Her prince. They became each other's refuge, a safe and magical place far from their troubled lives. Until the day Callen kissed her—Jessica's first real, dreamy kiss—and then disappeared from her life without a word.
Years later, everyone knows who Callen Hayes is. Famous composer. Infamous bad boy. What no one knows is that Callen's music is now locked deep inside, trapped behind his own inner demons. It's only when he withdraws to France to drink his way through the darkness that Callen stumbles into the one person who makes the music return. Jessica. His Jessie. And she still tastes of fresh, sweet innocence . . . even as she sets his blood on fire.
But they don't belong in each other's worlds anymore. There are too many mistakes. Too many secrets. Too many lies. All they have is that instinctive longing, that need—and something that looks dangerously like love.

Callen and Jessie’s story started as children, and their story continues more than a decade later. It’s fear and anger, guilt and resentment. It’s regret. Regret is an opportunity wasted. And Callen has to discover that on his own.
There is Fate. There is God’s message. There is learning from history. There is praying for help. And there is recognizing what that help is, and grasping onto it for all you’re worth, to the good in life; more importantly, the good in yourself. Find that beauty; that inner peace and light. There is Love.
“...life was more than words. It was laughter and love, faith and joy. And mostly, it was the deep peace that came from living fiercely and without regret.”
This was a re-read for me. I had read the book and wanted to read again in audio. The female narrator was disappointing as she was stiff and did not bring the characters to life, instead sounding as though she was just reading the book to us. I enjoyed the book overall.
Thoughtful, past and present

Callan's story was heartbreaking from the very beginning but for most of the story, I had a really hard time liking him. Jessica and Callan had met as kids and then one day, Callan disappeared. Years later, the two reconnect in Paris, but Callan doesn't know it's Jessica, just that he feels a pull to her. Then again, months later they reconnect and the realization of who she is floors him. I loved watching these two reconnect and dive into something that was so much more than either of them expected.
I had a really hard time reconciling the guy with Jessica with who Callan was in his real life. I wanted to like him, but at times just hated him. Of course there is redemption, but I cried for this boy and what he endured and what made him into the person that he was. Jess was always his lifeline and he almost threw it away.
This was a great story. So heartbreaking and yet quite a redemption story. I listened to the audio and the narrators did a wonderful job portraying the emotions of this story. Loved it!
