About this listen

Robbie Jordan is temporarily leaving Pans 'N Pancakes, her country store in South Lick, Indiana, to visit Santa Barbara, California - where wildfire smoke tinges the air, but a more immediate danger may lie in wait....

While looking forward to her high school reunion back in California, Robbie's anticipation is complicated by memories of her mother's untimely death. At first, she has fun hanging out with her old classmates and reuniting with the local flavors - avocados, citrus, fish, and spicy Cali-Mex dishes. But then she gets wind of rumors that her mother, an environmental activist, may not have died of natural causes.

With the help of friends, Robbie starts clearing the smoke surrounding the mystery - but what she finds could make it hard to get back to Indiana alive....

I liked that there was no profanity. The storyline was well developed. I thought the characters were believable.

I loved the narrator's voice.

Maddie Day has written another great installment in the Country Store Mystery series. All the usual characters are present as well as a few new ones and an intriguing mystery to solve.
Laural Merlington as always gave a standout performance as she breathed life into the storyline and gave each character their own distinct voice.
I highly look forward to the next in series.

Liked the changed venue for the main character, while still having mentions of familiar characters. Traveling to where the main character grew up was fun

Same character, traveling

Loved it! Just when you think you know the killer it goes a different direction. I love mysteries like this!

The Story was epic!!

Narrator is supposed be age 30 years? Her voice sounds more like a woman in her 60’s.
I find while she reads well. The disconnect of voice to age makes reading awkward

I've been listening to this series since book 1 and this one was disappointing. There were many storylines that just stopped without a resolution such as the black suv. I did like some of the new characters and hope they show up again in the series.

too many untied storylines

Loved this book! What a good mystery story!
The author keeps you guessing in this whodunit novel! She also does a great job of describing the area and the food so typical to California! Read this book!

Good story line. still not crazy about the narrator, she sounds like the character is in her 80s. 🤨 instead of 28. only negative.

the description of location.

I enjoyed the book, but not as much as when the stories are set in her hometown. Great mystery though!

Not my Favorite

Robbie Jordan is in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California for her high school reunion. It could not be more different from South Lick, Indiana. When someone questions her Mother's death, Robbie cannot help but investigate. Will she uncover the secrets from the past?

I love this series, but I just don't love this installment. I missed the familiar characters and setting. The mystery itself felt a bit flat. We begin by investigating the death of Robbie's Mom and kind of wander around from there. The resolution of the story wasn't satisfying. Did the accused do it? I guess? I'm not entirely convinced.

Not my Favorite in the Series
