About this listen

From the blood of the past, evil rises to seek undying vengeance...Prairie Bend.

Brilliant summers amid golden fields. Killing winters of razorlike cold. A peaceful, neighborly village, darkened by legends of death? Who is Nathaniel? For 100 years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered the name in wonder and fear. Some say he is simply a folk tale - a legend created to frighten children on cold winter nights. Some swear he is a terrifying spirit returned to avenge the past. And soon...very soon...some will come to believe that Nathaniel lives still - darkly, horrifyingly real. Nathaniel.

For young Michael Hall, newly arrived in isolated Prairie Bend after having lost his father to a sudden tragic accident, Nathaniel is the voice that calls him across the prairie night...the voice that draws him into the shadowy depths of the old, crumbling barn where he has been forbidden to go...the voice - chanting, compelling - he will follow faithfully beyond the edge of terror...Nathaniel.

The narrator was so good, and that is what kept me going, even though the story seemed to drone on and on. The story was good, but at some point I just kind of wished it would end.

The Narrator was Fantastic

I really enjoyed this book. It lives up to those that have come before and after. In my opinion, John Saul is up there with Dean Koontz and Stephen King. The difference is that John Saul uses one perspective that draws you in, and then a book that ends with unanswered (but hinted at) endings. I like John Saul's works and continue to read, or re-read, every one of his books.

John Saul does it again!

as always, John Saul keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, and Emily Sutton-Smith is excellent, as always as well. she is fast becoming my favorite narrator

excellent story, excellent narration

The ending of this book I thought was going to give me what I thought was closure. I'm not sure if there will be some sort of sequel, but when youf defeat the problem, it usually goes away. I feel I have more questions than answers this time. Not a bad book, I did enjoy it. I just want more answers.

What's the answer?

Her reading was robotic. I have read the paperback years ago, and loved it, but the reading ruined it. You can also tell where she took breaks, and then restarted. The tones didn't match.

The Narrator was awful!!

The Narrator was great and did a good job so this is no reflection on her. I was familiar with this in the abridged version and I felt that some important things were being left out. While the unabridged version did provide some more details, the story still lacked purpose and still fell apart in closure and presentation and left more questions than anything else.
As much as I like endings where it leaves you guessing, this one leaves you guessing throughout and not in a good way. It drags on and on and does not deliver or explain the why, how and what of the main title character and never answers any questions that I feel needed to be answered before the last act and they weren't. I feel if it would have made clearer connections with the characters then the ending would have been better.

I am a fan of John Saul but he does have a habit of doing this to the reader. It's one thing to leave a couple lingering questions, however leaving many lingering questions and an open ending just makes for a frustrating listen.

Thought the Unabridged would be much better
