About this listen
After a sudden fire leaves Matt's senile and troubled grandmother homeless, she moves in with the family. Her ceaseless demands cause unrelieved tension - and with her comes a shameful secret about her daughters that traps Matt between a dead aunt who haunts him and his own mother, who seeks redemption for her sister's sins - and her own. Matt transforms from a gregarious teenager to a hostile loner prone to fits of rage - tortured by chilling memories and haunted by nightmares.
Then a shocking tragedy shatters the family beyond repair, propelling Matt's mother and grandmother into a final, explosive confrontation...a showdown in which old wounds will be viciously torn open - and a horrific shadow from the past will spring an implacable life of its own, clawing toward Matt with the ferocious inevitability of death itself.

Brilliant summers amid golden fields. Killing winters of razorlike cold. A peaceful, neighborly village, darkened by legends of death? Who is Nathaniel? For 100 years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered the name in wonder and fear. Some say he is simply a folk tale - a legend created to frighten children on cold winter nights. Some swear he is a terrifying spirit returned to avenge the past. And soon...very soon...some will come to believe that Nathaniel lives still - darkly, horrifyingly real. Nathaniel.

Lush and deceptively tranquil, with its pristine beaches and blossoming vegetation, the island basks in splendid isolation off the South Carolina coast. Here, where sudden storms unleash the murderous rage of wind and sea, stands the Devereaux mansion, a once-great plantation house now crumbling amid ancient oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Here, Marguerite Devereaux, 50 and childless, has cast off her dreams to care for her aged, demanding mother.

Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

Horror with a reasonable ending
John Saul has always been one of my favorite horror authors. He gives just enough gore to make you think it's your normal horror book then takes it and throws it on it's side with psychological instead. I read this book YEARS ago and just now listened to it in Audio Book. Amazing. Just amazing!
You don't see the ending coming and even then you are left second guessing. Well done! I wish he was still publishing books!

I loved it!!
John Saul is my favorite author so im biased but this was a great book! The story was sad though and made you realize that parts are based on a sad reality (without giving spoilers). It was an easy listen that had me listen in 2 days at work not wanting to put it down. The characters were easy to hate and like. The narrator was good, i could tell who the male & females were and there was enough emotion that I could feel the characters emotion. I would recommend this book!

I'm not into ghost stories.
What disappointed you about Nightshade?
I should have paid better attention to the "haunt" word used in the description.
Has Nightshade turned you off from other books in this genre?
For sure.
What three words best describe Chet Green’s performance?
It would be unfair of me to base his performance on a story that is not my genre.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Nightshade?
Is all of them too harsh?
Any additional comments?
If ghost stories are your thing that this book might be for you.
