About this listen

Beyond the sparkling Hawaiian beaches, masked by the deceptive beauty of the rainforest, evil awaits 16-year-old Michael Sundquist and his mother, Katharine, an anthropologist who has come to the islands to study the unusual skeletal remains unearthed on the volcanic flanks of Haleakala, Maui.

Yet far below the black depths of the Pacific, a mysterious substance snakes through undiscovered fissures in the ocean floor, as nature itself seems to portend the terror to come.

Then, with the sudden, unexplained death of Michael's friend, a disturbing truth dawns: the corporation that is funding Katharine's dig has a far greater investment than she ever imagined - an investment in medical terror. And her son may be part of their hideous plan.

Not a horror book like I thought

Overall it was fine. Just was expecting horror like his other books. This more of a sci fi thriller. It’s an alright book if your interested. A little slow in some parts but good over all

A Saul novel

I must say usually the back drop of a story is of little interest to me. In this story however it plays a pivotal role. I liked the clean family fun thrill. I liked the characters especially the juvenile delinquent wannabe who is trying to cope with an abusive drunk parent. Little science so I could simply sit back and enjoy the ability of the narrator.

All in alvl a good Saturday afternoon read/listen and everything one would expect from Saul.

Saul is still hinky

I used to read John Saul and all I remember are ghostly stories about children. Been quite a while obviously. Since this was written in 1997 I believe I'll have to see what's happening with him now. This one reminded me of the early James Rollins for some reason. It does have that element of "Don't open that door!" When I read only I had to creep through those pages but now I've incororated the thrill of vocalizing, "DON'T!!!" Scared my family to death in the beginning but now they just ignore me with an occasional "Duh, Mom."
