About this listen

It was only supposed to be a game.

In a boring suburb, three lonely men seeking distractions from their monotonous routines get together in an abandoned house to play a macabre game of show-and-tell.

Nothing is off-limits in their little circle - anything, no matter how depraved, is welcome...so long as it's frightening.

But when one member brings what sounds like an audio recording of an actual murder to a meeting, featuring the tortured screams and pleas of an anonymous woman, the jaded club members find themselves truly rattled.

From that moment, the horrific audio - and strange visions of the recorded victim - begin to seep into their daily lives. Agonized cries and sobs are heard in otherwise empty rooms. Shadowed figures lurk in unlit corners. Somehow, the mysterious victim is reaching out to them from beyond death.

Or is she? Digging deeper, they begin to suspect they're being led back to the abandoned house by something else - something that seeks to consume them, body and soul.

And if they aren't careful, it'll get its way.

A good creepy story

I am a fan of both Ibsen and Hempel. This story has more of a short story feel to it but it still an interesting story. I always like how Ibsen creates believable and realistic characters, people that can be like anyone you know and then throws a horrible situation at them and Hempel portrays them well!

Solid performace, but story comes up a bit short.

I'm a fan of both Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hempel, and while Joe once again delivers a solid performance, this wasn't one of Ambrose's best stories. While it has his trademark creepiness, I never quite connected with the characters or the story in general. It's a fun horror story, but unlike many of Ambrose's other books, this one didn't really stick with me after I'd finished. Enjoyable, just not a homerun for me. This is one of those times where I wish audible allowed half stars because I'd definitely give the story and overall a score of 3.5, just can't bring myself to rate it higher.

Reminded me of The Ring

Three young guys with dead end jobs decide to start a new society and have their meeting at an old abandoned house. The goal of those meeting is sharing some scary things, but things start getting more frantic when they seem to have awakened something in the house.

Ibsen is a specialist in creating ghostly atmospheres in old houses, making them almost a main character in the story. We have three distinctive characters in this story. Despite being a quite short book, the three characters are well developed and feel like real people. Mike is likable, Jim is an ass, and Russel is the eternal misunderstood loner.

The presence they start to see after the first incident at the house reminded me a lot of The Ring, and probably her appearance was inspired by it. It’s pure terror.

The story was quite entertaining, and it trapped me from the start. The end was satisfactory, but if the book would have ended a couple of chapters before it would also have been okay. Ibsen wanted to give us closure regarding the three main characters, but I don’t think that was completely necessary. It’s just my personal opinion.

Joe Hempel’s narration was simply perfect. You really notice that he enjoys narrating this kind of stories, and that makes them even more enjoyable. Hempel inflected the right amount of emotion to the dialogs, and his characters’ interpretations were spot on. As usual, the audio production was perfect too.

Incredibly Creepy!!!

This starts with Mike out late one night, he stumbles upon an abandoned house and decides to go in. Right away he can feel that the house seems sinister but that doesn't frighten him, in fact, it gives him the idea of starting the Night Society. He decides to get some of his friends to come to the house and bring the scariest thing they can, be it a letter, a photo etc. Mike invites Jim and Russel. Russel is told that he is to bring the first thing and so sets about finding something scary. He finally settles on something that sounds like a lady being murdered. The three enter the house and Russel plays the tape. It's a truly creepy experience and the trio are too spooked to continue. But from then on, each seems to experience strange things. Something has followed them home!!

I am so glad I found this author!! He knows how to creep someone out without it getting gory or disturbing. He creates such atmospheric books that you will find yourself shivering!! I was listening to this one night when my kids were in bed and hubby was gone and I had to turn it off, it was freaking me out!!! Lol. I kept picturing that girl from The Ring.

The plot was awesome. I loved the idea of the Night Society, not that I'd do something like that though!! I don't even think I could go into the abandoned house!!! I loved how the story was told from each of their perspective because it ramped up the tension!! All three of the characters were well written and developed. I felt so sorry for them!!!

In all, this author has created something memorable. This book freaked me out but also had me wanting to read it again!! It was as compelling as it was chilling. This would make an amazing movie, though I don't think I could watch it!!! It would be too scary.

When you match this author with this narrator, you know you have a winner!! Joe Hempel has become a favourite narrator of mine. His range of tones and voices, and the way he puts emotions behind the characters is amazing. He knows how to tell a story and how to tel it well!! He brings both the characters and the atmosphere to life. He is definitely one of the best!

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

What exactly lives in the abandoned house?

It's hard to go wrong with any book written by Ambrose Ibsen and narrated by Joe Hempel. This duo has become a favorite of mine. Ambrose continues to write unique horror novels with twists to them that typically haven't been done before, or haven't been done as well by other authors. Joe Hempel's narration just works. He's got a great reading voice and has become one of my favorites.

That being said, Night Society is a good, fun listen and a solid horror novel. The book takes off right from the beginning with the newly formed Night Society listening to a recording of what sounds like an actual murder at an old abandoned house and well, something sinister in the house awakens. They can't get away from whatever it is. Even in their everyday life, it's reaching them. As they learn the story of what is living in the old abandoned house, they try to escape it's clutches. It's a fun ride and I'd definitely recommend a listen!

A high price to pay for a game.

This is a story of three guys who instead of playing cards on Friday night decide to play a game of “who can scare me more.” Each person must bring a photo, video, or story; as long as it will scare the pants off the others. One brings a downloaded recording off the web of a woman, crying and screaming until they believe she is ultimately murdered. This does scare the hell out of them and drives them to find out if the recording is real or not. Thus begins a tale of terror brought to each individual’s doorstep that heard those dreadful cries. It appears as if the murdered woman is calling out to each of them, drawing them to her for some unknown reason. Eventually the trail leads to an abandoned house with a horrific tale of its own. It is here that the truth becomes known and our players realize the price tag of their game. Different Thriller

This is another good horror by author but enjoyed his Afterlife Series and Ulrich Files more. This is about 3 men who decide to do a show and tell game in abandon house (so it seems) to see who presents the best scariest thing. They get more than they bargained for. I felt sorry for all 3. It is a creepy thriller with great narration. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. THANK YOU!!

The society will have much to fear

The night society, a couple of night owls looking for something to do. They want to scare each other. A creepy old house. A recording that will chill you to the bone. An apparition great is stalking them all. A sinister tale of a dark family secret. Will any survive? I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
