Publisher's summary

Nutrition is essential to living a healthy, happy, and successful life. Yet a world of misconceptions and promises of easy results too often stands in our way - and can even be harmful to our overall health.

The key is to cut through the noise and find the medically backed, statistically proven information about healthy eating and living. These 36 in-depth lectures explore the fundamentals of good nutrition and offer a practical guide for applying these fundamentals to your lifestyle. The power of nutrition lies not just in grasping the concepts behind it, but also in applying those concepts to daily living. This means learning where to find authoritative nutrition information, mastering the science behind nutrients and the body, recognizing what your personal daily requirements of each nutrient should be, building a distinct exercise regimen, and more.

A dietitian and award-winning lecturer, Professor Anding gives you a wealth of invaluable tips you can easily apply to your own eating habits. You'll learn how to calculate your own dietary needs, how to create your own nutrition and exercise plans, how to recognize when a product or service is really a health fraud, and more.

Crafted with the needs of individual people in mind, this course is both a fascinating learning experience and the perfect investment in your personal health - one that will educate you, motivate you, and reward you for the rest of your life.

YES, there IS a guidebook that comes with it (PDF)

Would you consider the audio edition of Nutrition Made Clear to be better than the print version?

(Other reviews are incorrect. A Course Guidebook IS available on Audible as a PDF, there is a guide for each chapter/lecture as well as supplemental material and references to many other sources.) I like being able to listen while in the car or on a walk, so I prefer just the audio most of the time. Some of the things in the guidebook enhance the lecture material, and it's great to review after listening to a lecture or to further knowledge on a particular subject. .

What other book might you compare Nutrition Made Clear to and why?

It's more like sitting in a college nutrition class than it is like reading a book.

Which character – as performed by Professor Roberta H. Anding – was your favorite?

N/A

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. The roughly 30 minute chapters are perfectly broken up to be able to listen to 1-2 per day.

Any additional comments?

Great source for learning basic, fundamental facts of nutrition without having to wade through sales of fad diets and magic pills.

Nutrition Made Clear

If you could sum up Nutrition Made Clear in three words, what would they be?

Dietition's view point.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nutrition Made Clear?

It was made clear that Buyer Be Ware. Definitely look at the nutrition labels of products, be aware of how many servings in a container, and how many colories/fat per serving.

What aspect of Professor Roberta H. Anding’s performance would you have changed?

The performance of Professor Roberta H. Anding was exceptional.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It was interesting to learn that vitamines and supplements are not regulated by FDA and some could be harmful to your health, and that they may have more of an ingredient (or less) than what they advertise or have on the nutrition label.

Any additional comments?

Every chapter begins with a classical music score. That made it hard to move around the book to get to a specific topic unless you remember which track contains which topic. I knocked Performance down a couple of stars because of that. There was a time when I wanted to review to a previous topic and I didn't remember where it was. So, it took listening through the music in the beginning of each track before getting to what the title is.

Excellent Audiobook. Everyone should read it!

I really wish everyone (especially in the U.S) got and listened to this audiobook. Knowledge is power and this audiobook is packed with honest, practical, and scientific information. One of the best audiobooks I have listened to. Whether a average joe looking to increase your knowledge on nutrition, a personal trainer, health coach, or fitness professional this audiobook is an excellent resource. Very detailed, thorough, and read wonderfully.

Excellent content very well presented

The only blemish on this otherwise exceptional book and presentation is the speakers' propensity for poor grammar and miss pronunciation of certain words... these issues are minor in comparison with the really great content... the first really good book in the highly touted "great courses" series...

A ton of useful information but a few gaps

It's a lot to absorb but it was almost entirely good information. I felt like the jabs at keto diets and fasting could use a bit more substance and science backing them up or be left out. She seemed to base most of the counter arguments on somewhat dated information. She might be right but she didn't argue those points very convincingly for me, and I was hoping for more informed opinions on those specific subjects as there's a lot of people in my social circle who promote them and my own personal intermittent fasting has worked out very well so far. The abundance of info on vitamins and why whole food diets make the most sense was great, so I still learned quite a bit to help keep balance in my diet.

Excellent information!

As a multiple decade career as a nurse, a personal passion for nutrition and healthy eating, teaching patients how to manage diabetes/kidney failure/etc, I found this so informative - and accurate. I appreciate that she cites research. She also addresses the too-common conflicting research! I appreciate she doesn’t dis vegetarian/vegan diets. I highly recommend this for getting educated on nutrition and eating well.

Really Quite Excellent

I was impressed with the amount of information packed in each of the lectures. The professor does an excellent job of taking complex topics and explaining them in an approachable way.

The area I feel she falls short is by being stuck on weight loss/gain is based on “calories in calories out.” This assumes that all calories are created equal and research shows that this is not true. She very clearly explains how weight is regulated by hormones, but this is where she stops.

The different types of food we eat influence the production of hormones in different ways which is why calories are not all equal. For example, 50 calories of simple carbohydrates are treated differently in the body than 50 calories of fat, and hormones regulate whether this will be burned or stored.

I wanted more information on this from the professor but it wasn’t included.
