Story
Raised as a fourth-generation farmer, when Will Harris inherited White Oak Pastures he was a full-time commodity cowboy who played hard and fast with every tool the system offered–chemicals, antibiotics, steroids, and more. His ancestors had built a highly profitable, conventionally run machine, but over time he found himself disgusted with the excess, cruelty, and smalltown devastation this system entailed. So he bet the farm on forging a different way of doing things. One that works with nature not against it, and bridges the quickly widening delta between consumers and their food.

Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Publisher's summary
"In a world where so many of us are craving a life of simplicity and meaning, Old-Fashioned on Purpose gives you the roadmap to rediscovering what really matters." —Hal Elrod, bestselling author of The Miracle Morning
With a foreword from singer, songwriter, and New York Times bestselling author Rory Feek
Creator of The Prairie Homestead blog and the Old-Fashioned On Purpose podcast Jill Winger reveals that the secrets to finding happiness today is by turning to the lost arts of the past
When the pandemic hit in 2020, flour and vegetable seeds flew off the shelves. But homesteader and entrepreneur Jill Winger believes these longings for sourdough bread and fresh veggies are more than a trend.
As our society races toward progress, we’ve left something important behind. We are more connected than ever before, yet we’re still feeling unfulfilled. In Old-Fashioned on Purpose, Winger shows how simplifying our lives and adopting retro skills such as gardening and handiwork can be the key to creating the happy and healthy life we’re yearning for. In this book, listeners will learn:
- How to find joy in the kitchen (even if you hate to cook)
- Proven strategies for growing your own groceries
- The surprising stress-relievers that can be found in your backyard
- How to craft a more grounded routine and save money in the process
- Clever tips and creative DIYs to help you embark on your old-fashioned journey
You don’t have to live on a farm to cultivate a simpler life. This inspiring and practical book offers a powerful new sense of purpose, with plenty of tomatoes, chickens, and bread making along the way.

Jill Never Disappoints
Being a modern-day pioneer can be challenging, but Jill makes it seem effortlessly attainable. Her down-to-earth approach as an authentic modern homesteader is refreshing and relatable - no matter what your background may be.
I love how she empowers others to reconnect with their roots, reminding us of the importance of living a simpler life in harmony with nature.

Jill has out done herself!
Inspiring, informative even for the experienced homesteader! Exceeded my very high expectations! A wonderful listen for the whole family as we go to school or roast pumpkins for a year of fresh pumpkin pie!

The life I want!!
I have called myself a homesteader for many years because I didn't know what else to call my desire for a slower simpler old-fashioned life. This book, the concept of living old fashioned on purpose describes the kind of life I'm trying to cultivate. So inspiring!

Love it!
I’m loving this book so far! It echoes our family’s feelings of needing to find a space outside of the busy city. I haven’t learned a ton yet, it is mostly just reassuring and encouraging. It’s nice to know you’re not alone.

The Soul Searching
This book reached into the crevices of my innermost being. I've always been drawn to days gone by and family heirlooms handed down that showed me the ways my ancestors lived. We recently built a house on 2 acres and I read this book at the recommendation of a friend on Facebook... go figure. After the part on social media, I realized I have a problem. I'm in shock. I set my limits to 30 minutes a day, made a sourdough starter, and I'm starting a garden. This is the kick in the butt I needed. Our youngest is in college. Better late than never! Thank you, Jill for bringing this home me. I'm finding me again. It's time.
