Publisher's summary
* Important note *
Please be aware that the 1988 Buteyko Breathing Manual was written for healthcare professionals and has numerous medical terms (end of the note).
This thought-provoking collection of original material, translated from Russian, includes interviews with Dr. Buteyko covering the development of his ideas from 1962 to 1998 and his main CEOB (Conscious Elimination of Deep Breathing) manual. It is important because it provides insight into the power of his method when used by trained practitioners, especially in a clinical setting. His visionary and disciplined approach to healing was so successful that it threatened the medical establishment, which unfortunately reacted by trying to suppress it, but it managed to survive because of his independent mind, tenacity, and determined character.
He saw breathing as a fundamental measurable parameter in the treatment of 150 common diseases and because of his disciplined scientific research, he never allowed it to be considered simply an "alternative asthma treatment" as it is often now perceived in the West. With trained practitioners and breathing clinics, it would result in a profound improvement in the health of millions of people suffering from many different conditions throughout the world.
The interviews complement each other well, adding interesting details of his life and work, also supporting the previously translated important 1969 Buteyko Lecture at the Moscow State University, which sums up his achievement to that date and then adds information on the subsequent development of his thinking.
Here is a summary of the main chapters:
- 1. 1962 interview while he was head of a functional diagnostics laboratory within the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Science. It covers his account of the discovery of overbreathing as the main cause of ill health and initial tests on patients and their recovery through normalization of their breathing.
- 2. 1982 interview covers the development of his theoretical ideas and practical work in further detail.
- 3. Large practical guide (CEOB Breath Retraining Manual) showing his systematic approach to "the Conscious Elimination of Deep Breathing'" in sick patients in a clinical setting. He regarded an unregulated DIY approach to breath reduction and steroid and medication reduction as dangerous.
Appendices
1. Table of Health Zones
2. Symptoms List of Hyperventilation Syndrome
3. CEOB Patient Knowledge Test
4. Use of Jogging and CEOB
5. Steroids and CEOB
6. Patient Diary
4. 1997 Buteyko answers questions by callers on a public radio program
5. Interview with a Siberian newspaper in 1998 when he was 75, where he talks about his work and medical and spiritual perspective.
6. Interview on Ukrainian Television in the late 1980s with a detailed restating of his work, where he advocates for breathing retraining centers in Ukraine and Russia.

There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Story
This lecture took place in the largest auditorium of the Moscow State University (named after M. V. Lomonosov). This special event was organized for the staff of the university. It was likely the classified nature of Buteyko’s research during the 1960s (for first Soviet spaceship missions or Soviet Cosmos) and exclusiveness of his discoveries that predetermined the organization of this lecture. Hence, it was definitely a very large and significant event for the scientific staff of the Moscow State University, the most famous and prestigious university of the USSR.

Imagine a breathing technique that can increase oxygen uptake and delivery to the cells, improve blood circulation, and unblock the nose. Perhaps it can help open the airways of the lungs, enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, improve sleep, and bring calmness to the mind. It might even restore bodily functions disturbed by stress, build greater resilience, and help you to live longer. You might think this description sounds farfetched. But it isn’t.

Millions of people are suffering from chronic illnesses that, unbeknownst to them, are the result of exposure to environmental toxins and infectious agents such as mold and Borrelia, which causes Lyme disease. Millions. Because the symptoms of these illnesses are so varied and unusual, many of these individuals have sought medical care only to be dismissed, as if what they are experiencing is “in their head”. Many (if not most) have tried to tough it out and continue to function without hope of improvement. Unfortunately, their illnesses are very real.
