About this listen

Dear Fellow Caregiver,

You are not alone.

I'm with you.

Have you ever felt like you are in a tsunami of emotions? One day, everything was fine, and then something about someone you love changed forever. Out of Love was written for you, in your time of need, and for those moments that feel hopeless. I wrote these words to encourage, inspire, and let you know that, "Everything will be ok, honey," as my dear mom, Rosemary Ann Hakim (aka RahRah) would say if she were still with us.

Out of love, I learned how to be a caregiver.

Out of necessity, I created systems and tools that supported the daily tasks inherent in caring for someone with a life-threatening dis-ease.

During the six years of my mom's illness, I journaled daily and in the aftermath of her death, I was able to see the vital lessons those years taught me.

In my daily life, I'm a business consultant and community builder. The life of a caregiver was unfamiliar to me but somehow, as you will, I figured it out (not perfectly) purposely. I am honored to share my personal journey with you.

As my mom always said, "Life goes on."

And as usual, she was right about that. You will see that in this book.

Everything is going to be ok. I promise.

I'm with you.

Warmly,

Lynn Abaté-Johnson

Beautiful and useful insights!

I highly recommend this read to anyone impacted by the death or impending death of a loved one, especially if you have a role in that person’s caretaking, decision making, and family interaction. This book is equally valuable to anyone providing comfort and support to someone who is impacted by such a loss. I read the last third of Abaté’s book on a flight from Seattle to Atlanta. At 36,000 ft, from Idaho to Arkansa tears of gratitude frequently filled my eyes as Abaté shared experiences from her heart so similar to mine and perhaps yours. Her story has provided me new insights about what was going on within me and around me as I cared for both my parents and mother-in-law before their passings. Far beyond a practical how-to book, though it certainly is a trove of useful practices, this is an exploration of self-discovery, recognition of ones limits, one’s gifts, and how to leverage resources at hand. It is a book about healing and recognizing beauty that frequently lies hidden in the shadows. The most important lesson I learned within these pages is that whatever one is able to bring to the love and care of a loved one, it is enough. You are enough. And you and your relationships can come out stronger and more whole however you choose traveling that final journey with your loved one. -Steve (Seattle)
