About this listen

An inspirational call to build deep business and personal relationships as the foundation of a meaningful life and purposeful collaborations, drawing from the wisdom of legendary partnerships including Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, Ben and Jerry, Desmond and Leah Tutu, and the collective who saved humanity by closing the ozone hole.

Our individualistic society has created an environment of fear, division, and domination, which has crushed our ability to relate meaningfully to each other and diminished our capacity to innovate and collaborate.

Jean Oelwang, president and founding CEO of Virgin Unite, has been on a decade-long exploration to find out how to nurture relationships with depth and purpose. Deep connections shape who we are and have a profound ripple effect on everything we do, supporting us to achieve more, withstand anything, and amplify impact. Those enduring partnerships are the foundation of a meaningful life as well as the backbone of any successful organization and collaboration.

From hundreds of interviews with 60 great partnerships, ranging from business partners, to friends, to life partners, who have made a profound difference, Oelwang offers new insight into how to build relationships that matter. She identifies six core principles including the all-important virtues that connect great partners, the daily rituals that they use to stay in sync, and the skills that allow them to disagree respectfully and productively.

Packed with wisdom to nourish the relationships that give us strength and meaning, Partnering is a profound call-to-action to forge partnerships in service of a greater purpose.

Wonder what elephants, dead fish and vomit have in common? Read this book! Jean takes listeners through her decade-long partnership journey with some of the world’s most distinguished leaders she has worked with, including Kofi Annan, Desmond Tutu, and Jimmy Carter. Jean’s experience as the CEO of Virgin Unite has convinced her the only way to succeed is through global collaboration. She shares practical advice on challenges working with diverse partners, finding meaning and shared values, how to slow down and connect, the need for joy and humor, why work and personal relationships can and should be be blended and the courage, humility and trust required to make partnerships succeed. From solving the ozone crisis to eradicating smallpox and launching successful enterprises, Jean adeptly leverages detailed, firsthand accounts rich in applicable teachings and she does so in an eloquent manner. If only Jean could record all audiobooks. As enchanting as it was to listen to, now I want the paper version as this is resource you will want to flip back through again and again as you work on partnering challenges and opportunities.

I LOVED THE BOOK!!!!!! It’s magnificent. This is what I needed in my life right now for my nonprofit and personal relationships. These are the lessons and experiences I needed to be exposed to. I’m better informed about the power of partnering and who I need to be to be a better partner. One plus one equals millions. I needed this to see how exponential change happens which is exactly what we need right now.

Partnering gives perspective on the importance of collaboration and deep connection to create purpose, impact and cultivate joy throughout one’s life. A shift from the hyper individualism thinking that perpetuates loneliness to embracing the rich fulfillment of partnering. Fantastic examples of great partnerships and their accomplishments throughout history.

Inspiring, educational & humbling

This one took a little more time to get through. The subject was pertinent and the examples were there but the perspectives were challenging to grasp. It felt almost too positive but maybe worth revisiting some of the chapterd/stories for context.

Insightful discussion on relationships

It’s interesting, but not this long interesting. More than a TED talk, less than 6 hours. Narrator reads in monotone, zero emphasis or variation in her reading, and it gets old.

Looong book about collaboration

This book was mentioned in Sir Richard Branson’s awesome autobiography. I was skeptical at first, I think because Sir Richard’s book was so impactful.
Well, it was well with the read because this book left me pondering so, so much.
The fabulous people I have in my life fill me with much gratitude.
First, my small circle of friends are near and very dear to me. One friend I have had since the 2nd grade, is still my wonderful friend today.
Here, the wonderful friends have something so special - a love that is unbreakable regardless. The relationships mentioned in this book left me weepy eyed. Makes me the more thankful for the small number I now have.
This is a great book. I hope many will read it and I pray it’s continued success. I only hope I will write such an incredible, strengthening and greatly impactful book one day.
Thank you for each sacrifice made to bring this book to print. Hugs!

As an earth scientist, working with large teams, this book was extremely helpful at pinpointing ways to build successful and meaningful collaborations. The author did a great job in approaching to topic and incorporating inspiration across disciplines. I think this should be required reading for scientists, politicians, world leaders, and everyone else we need to reverse global climate change and make this world a better place for everyone.

Inspiring. Enlightening. Hopeful

What an incredible perspective. So many incredible people. And distilled into lessons we can all use.

Amazing to get insights into this life and mind

The research and findings of the author are completely overshadowed by her obvious liberal bias. Her use and praise of liberal issues and liberal politicians as examples of patterning is so prevalent that I couldn’t tell if I was read a book on personal leadership development or a political campaign.
