Publisher's summary
"[A] glorious retrospective on the film franchise that put the fear of the Tall Man in every horror fan's heart." (HorrorHound Magazine)
“Dustin McNeill's Phantasm Exhumed is a much-needed, long overdue tribute to these seminal films. Equal parts erudite examination and enthusiastic love-letter, this book provides an in-depth history and a wealth of obscure information that even the most hardcore fan will find fascinating. Engaging, compulsive reading. I highly recommend it!" (Brian Keene, best-selling author of The Rising, Ghoul, and The Last Zombie)

On December 26, 1973, The Exorcist was released. Within days it had become legend. Moviegoers braved hours-long lines in winter weather to see it. Some audience members famously fainted or vomited. Half a century later, the movie that both inspired and transcends the modern horror genre has lost none of its power to terrify and unsettle. The Exorcist Legacy reveals the complete story of this cultural phenomenon, from the real-life exorcism in 1949 Maryland that inspired William Peter Blatty's bestselling novel on which the movie is based, to its many sequels, prequels, TV series, and homages.

In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas—some iconic, others never-before-revealed—that have played out on the stage and off camera. Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B. Mayer to Moonlight. Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes.

The landscape that the Brat Pack memorialized is rich with cultural themes and significance, and has influenced an entire generation who still believe that life always turns out like an '80s movie. You Couldn't Ignore Me If You Tried takes us back to that era, through Susannah Gora's interviews with key players such as Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, and John Cusack, and mines all the material from the movies to the music to the way the films were made to show how they helped shape our visions for romance, friendship, society, and success.

Comedians Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld never thought anyone would watch their silly little sitcom about a New York comedian sitting around talking to his friends. NBC executives didn't think anyone would watch either, but they bought it anyway, hiding it away in the TV dead zone of summer. But against all odds, viewers began to watch, first a few and then many, until nine years later nearly 40 million Americans were tuning in weekly.

Phantastic!
The Phantasm franchise holds a special place in my heart. Some of the stories in this book I'd heard before, but many I hadn't. I especially enjoyed listening to the sections about Don Coscarelli's first film, Jim the World's Greatest.

Excellent listen
I listened to his books on Halloween, and enjoyed them, so gave this a shot. Enjoyed it thoroughly. I saw Phantasm 2 first, and never actually saw the original. Went and watched it and saw the slapdash final product described so well by the book. The ending...so bad, but hey, it started a fascinating series described so well in this book, and now I want to see the other sequels. Narrator is simply outstanding. I'll listen to the author's other books, too.
