About this listen

The New York Times best seller from AK Press is now an audiobook — read by Adrienne Maree Brown herself!

How do we make social justice the most pleasurable human experience? How can we awaken within ourselves desires that make it impossible to settle for anything less than a fulfilling life? Author and editor Adrienne Maree Brown finds the answer in something she calls “pleasure activism,” a politics of healing and happiness that explodes the dour myth that changing the world is just another form of work. Drawing on the black feminist tradition, she challenges us to rethink the ground rules of activism.

Her mindset-altering essays are interwoven with conversations and insights from other feminist thinkers, including Audre Lorde, Joan Morgan, Cara Page, Sonya Renee Taylor, and Alexis Pauline Gumbs. Together, they cover a wide array of subjects — from sex work to climate change, from race and gender to sex and drugs — building new narratives about how politics can feel good and how what feels good always has a complex politics of its own.

Building on the success of her popular Emergent Strategy, Adrienne brings her audience experimental, expansive, and innovative ways to meet the challenges that face our world today.

Made me realize the limits of my experience, not just in my journey but understanding the myriad of sexual expressions of pleasure, shame, self worth, power, desire, and most importantly self-worth.

Beautifully read for a storytelling format that varied from song to interviews.

Eye opening

I'm always fulfilled when I read anything by AMB. This, however, may be my favorite. The necessity of pleasure in life is undeniable. AMB illuminates it from many angles that create an invitation for more folks to be curious and take ownership of their need for pleasure.
Another bonus is AMB's narration. No one else would have done this work justice!

A Pleasure to Read

Love and pleasure are liberating. It’s taken me 39 years to know this to be true. Growing up in America in a time where women were shamed at every turn, and made to feel as if we are never pretty enough, thin enough, good enough. Societal pressures caused unwavering body dysphoria in young women, trans and nonbinary folk. AMB addresses tearing down toxic societal norms to tap into pleasure and what pleasure can do for ALL, especially BIPOC & LGBTQIA + folks.

This book is such a fantastical experience. I have a physical book, and I love being able to refer to it. But my goodness was the audible version a gift to my soul. AMB has such a soothing voice, and presence, anime to top it off she sings in between sections. It's not just and audiobook, it's an experience.
