About this listen

The mysterious, indomitable warrior? Ruthless criminal overlord? The Riel'gesh - mythical demigod? Dedicated friend and protector?

Equipped with skills far beyond those of the outworlders, Rezkin has been suddenly thrust into a foreign world. The young warrior clings to his only known purpose as he continues his search for any information about his identity and the reason for his existence.

While the hardened warrior scorns both dueling and tournaments, he believes some of the answers he seeks may be found at the King's Tournament, the greatest dueling championship in all of the kingdoms. As he searches for the elusive Striker Farson, who may be the only person alive who holds the clues, the young warrior and his friends embark on a journey fraught with danger, mystery, and intrigue.

Amid fears of the kingdom's economic collapse, rumors of an eminent military draft, and the machinations of a mad, tyrannical king, a new revelation threatens to upend all the warrior's plans.

This book is intended for adult listeners. It contains graphic violence, creative language, and sexual innuendo. This book does not contain explicit sexual content.

Wow

I read a review for the first book claiming the nature of the main character did not allow for suspense. I disagree.

Nick Podehl is just amazing. He really brings the story to life in both books of this series.

Thoroughly Entertaining!

I've recently been on a Nick Podehl binge because he is at the top 3 of my list of great narrators. I first heard him if memory serves with Melissa McPhail's books and I was so impressed with him I've been looking for his other narrations. This book is so wonderful and it's the type of story that I really enjoy. I tend to like coming of age stories with a heroic character. Although the author chose only to touch on Rez' childhood and teenage years, we learn a great deal of what his life was like. While some reviewers seem not to appreciate that Rez is perfect in every way, to me this is the bread & butter of what epic fantasy is. Characters who are bigger than life and yet are very human. In this case I think Kade did a commendable job constructing the main character out of a scenario that we're all familiar with; a child who spends every waking hour training and learning right from the cradle. What kind of person does that make? I found myself smiling and laughing at Rez's thoughts and how he was made that much more real from the other characters who interact with him. This is a story that is action-packed and never left me bored. I can't remember enjoying a book this much since Robin Hobb's books--of which I am impatiently awaiting the next installment. Now, I am impatiently awaiting the conclusion of this series. Thank you, Kel Kade and Nick Podehl.

Good but...

Overall phenomenal story, but the women constantly swooning gets tiresome and trite rather quickly. We get it Rez is the most gorgeous man alive and all women turn into bumbling idiots drooling after his flesh protuberance. Other than that the story is captivating.

Best Audiobook I've listened to in a while.

Best fantasy book I've listened to in a while. The narrator was great and the book was nothing short of fantastic. The characters are very well written. I really do not like the female characters they can be grating, shallow and annoying. However, I don't think I am suppose to like most of them.

Love this book and would highly recommend it. I can't wait for the next book!

All around excellent

This book (as well as book 1) has been one of the best I've listened to. The story has been somewhat predictable with many of the "big reveal" moments obvious from the beginning, but the interactions between the characters, the attention to detail, and the effect but brief descriptions create a world in which it is easy to become immersed.

The narrator has a fantastic range of voices and it is quite easy to tell which character is speaking. His portrayal of females is somewhat cliche and at times grating, but also lends to the personalities of the people so the performance is still deserving of 5 stars.

This book is not necessarily a great work of fiction, but for people like me who read to get lost in different worlds without having to do too much thinking or remember minute details, it does exactly that.

Very entertaining

Well written and the narrator did it justice. A bad narrator can destroy a story where as a good one can bring all the characters to life as the author intended. The story is a good one and the narrator did a fine job. It is a three-part cliffhanger and leaves you looking forward to more.
