Publisher's summary

Who are my kind?

Since my stepsister, Nakona Ril, has joined the family, I’ve finally settled into a happy life of cooking and potion brewing at the family inn. But the shadow of war looms ahead, with the fate of the world and my own destiny fast approaching. Monsters are coming, bandits seek to steal my potions, and countries set their sights upon the rumor of a talented alchemist. Why won’t they all just leave me alone?

Excellent, cute, a little too drawn out battles

most enjoyable for sure, but the drawing out battle against the dark monsters is too long. it's long enough that it sounds like an audible version of Dragon Ball Z posing, though with a little bit more action. I will update this when I finish the book.

Series keeps you interested and involved! The moment you finish the story you are ready for the next one!

As the years passed you begin to realize more and more that there is a little something that is different about the main character. And you start cheering and expecting great things to happen! Good story!

somewhat better than the first book, but

I think this book was more put together and all parts seemed to be moving in the same direction this time. The story is getting more interesting and ended with you wanted more. So that is an improvement, the social commentary still there but more intend with the story than someone screaming at you like the first book. Still some inconsistencies with high magic, advance medicine and almost stone age living conditions.

The narrator does a good job, but seems mis-match with story. Feel he would do better with a pirate or space war story. Can't figure out why I can tell he has talent but just not a wow for this narration.

So going to stick with the series and go on to the next book

Comfy yet contrived

At it's best it's a very enjoyable listen that puts a soft smile on my face. At it's worst I'm cringing and hoping the story moves on.

Biggest flaws are the female reader has almost no vocal range, making it difficult to tell different characters apart and the combat is the equivalent of playground children playing pretend, shouting stuff like "SUPER HYPER ATACK GOO AAAAAA" which really removes all since of excitement and tension.

At it's best it's the kind of feel good listen that I'd love to listen to before bed.

Tbh I'm loving this so far.

So far it's a really intriguing story. I like that it goes into details with some people and objects but not like spend 5 mins on it, it's a good balance. The first couple of hours of the first part sucked with the baby wailing parts but that's not really in the second part thank goodness lol. Well sucked isn't the right word, annoying perhaps? And if I remember the first part of this story it would be in the girls view and then the guys view basically did the same story for like an hour. Part two tells the story from one view and then continues it from the other person's view without a recap. I fell like that's a good use of time instead of wasting repeating what the other person literally just said. The guys part of the story (not the VA) is weird bc he does contradict himself a bit. Like he says thanks for helping him hit on a women he likes but then thinks he doesn't want help at all in a strange way lol. A bit weird and doesnt sound natural story wise, but he seems like a cool character. I hope he gets up to full strength and fights something strong with or to protect his kids. Sort of like at the end of this one but he doesn't end up getting saved lol. Just a straight epicness beat down on something tough.

As a performance. . . .both VAs (Cassandra Morris & Graham Halstead) did a amazing freaking job, loved it. (Other than the baby wailing lol) I think both VAs make that character come to life and you can understand what they are feeling with what and how they are saying it. (Most of the time, some of it is just contradicting story wise but at no fault to the VA at all)

Overall I like it. Tbh the only reason I got this audible thing was because I wanted to listen to manga or light novels at work. They don't have many options so I don't feel a membership is justifiable so just will buy this one when it comes out with part 3 bc I like this story.

I've never reviewed anything so this probably won't help anyone lol.

But as far as this story, past the baby crying part, it's legit. I approve and will continue to listen when more content is provided.

Ordinary life no more

While the first book takes its time setting up the characters and setting, with a very much slice of life style, this one does more of the same but the pace picks up. The overall plot begins to unravel and Tina is involved in quiet a bit of conflict. I am really interested in seeing how this all unfolds!

Character quality has gone down

Why did the MC become so dumb all of a sudden. The first book was great! Second book is all self doubt and connections she would have made in the first book are non existent in the 2nd. What happened to the MC we knew and why has she become so dumb

CoachMD

The story is actually pretty good, only issue is the books are way too short per credit, omnibus is a must

A mixed bag, somewhere between clever and contrived

Honestly a bit of a letdown compared to the previous light novel.

Without spoiling too much, there’s a minor time skip that leaves many of the details important to the world incredibly vague. It’s a convenient writing trick to BS your way out of a corner, but it also feels incredibly insincere.

I was worried about this happening, but this novel is much more action oriented than the previous, and it’s to the narrative’s detriment. It also makes the world feel a lot less believable.

The method of storytelling shifted completely. Was this done by a ghost writer? The delivery is okay but pales in comparison to the previous novel.

The strained structure makes the weaknesses of the vocal performances more pronounced.

I’ve certainly listened to and enjoyed worse, but this is approaching that valley of mediocrity in an attempt to become something far removed from the original premise. The stakes have been raised, but this was a nice refreshing afternoon cake that didn’t really need stakes to begin with.

I wanted to rate this story 3 1/2, but individual ratings don’t allow for a half measure. It’s worth the read if you like the side characters of the story, but the main lead is left behind and flanderized.
