Cade Jennings was always there for me when I needed him—until he wasn't.
I'd spent my entire life loving my best friend's older brother. Every single one of my birthday wishes was spent hoping Cade would finally notice me. And then, one day, he did.
But not all love stories have happy endings.
It's been years since I left the small town of Sutten Mountain devastated and heartbroken. I'd used the pain to fuel a bestselling novel that solidified I'd never have to return.
Until tragedy struck, forcing me to face the man who shattered my heart. I thought I'd be strong enough to see him again. I didn't expect the angry, broken man staring back at me.
The more time we spend around each other, the more I see glimpses of the man I fell in love with. His touch still owns me. His kiss still brands me. Even after all this time, the feelings I have for him still consume me.
Cade and I are unfinished business, and this time, he's not letting me leave until we rewrite our story.
From the author of Black Ties and White Lies comes an all-new series of complete standalones set in Sutten Mountain. Rewrite Our Story, the first book in the series, is a steamy second chance, best friend's brother romance.

I wanted to like this one and for the most part I did. I loved the town, I loved the idea. Marigold has been in love with her best friend's (Pippa) brother since she was young. When they were teenagers, they grew close and had a secret romantic relationship. Then it was time for her to go off to college and she wanted to stay with him but he pushed her away. Now she's back in town because Cade & Pippa's mom died.
I feel like Cade was a jerk. He's the one who pushed her away yet he was so mad that she never came back. He blamed everything on her and he never once apologized for it or for how he was acting. Also, it started feeling like there were too many steamy scenes, to the point that I just flipped through them because I felt like we were losing the plot. I wish they would've had more dating thrown in there. Don't get me wrong.. there were some sweet moments in there too.
That being said, I did listen to the audiobook of this and CJ Bloom & Aaron Shedlock did an awesome job.

The story follows Mare (Marigold) and Cade, her best friend Pippa’s older brother. Mare grew up alongside Pippa’s family, spending more and more time with them after the passing of her mom, as her grief-stricken father became withdrawn. During those years, Mare and Cade formed a connection outside of her friendship with Pippa, a bond that evolved into a secret summer romance right before Mare left Sutten Mountain for Chicago. That summer was full of love, but neither of them was ready to ask the other to give up their dreams, so they parted ways. Years later, Mare returns to Sutten Mountain for the first time since leaving—to attend Pippa and Cade’s mom’s funeral—and finds herself face-to-face with Cade once more.
I’ll be honest—this book surprised me in a good way. Whenever I try a new author, I’m always hesitant about whether their style will vibe with my reading preferences. Kat Singleton’s writing, though, is incredibly engaging, and I found myself hooked even when I thought I was done reading for the day. That said, I have to admit that best friend’s brother and second-chance romance are not my go-to tropes. In fact, second-chance romance is probably one of my least favorites. Add to that the fact that this is a slower burn, and I wasn’t sure if this would click for me. But it did. The pacing, especially with the timeline jumps between past and present, worked really well and kept the story moving without losing steam.
And the spice? Totally worth the slow build. Once Cade and Mare reignite their love as adults, the chemistry is off the charts. They’re constantly drawn to each other, and while the spice is tastefully done and lightly dominant, I will say it felt like there might have been a bit of overcompensation toward the end. Don’t get me wrong—I enjoyed it—but there were moments when I found myself craving more plot rather than another spicy scene.
Now, let’s talk tension—or rather, the lack of it. While I loved the emotional undercurrents of the story, I never felt like there was a big challenge or obstacle for Cade and Mare to overcome. The grief over losing their mothers was a shared emotional thread, but it was handled in such a healthy, supportive way that it didn’t create the kind of stakes I usually look for in a romance. And once they decided to be honest about their feelings, there wasn’t much drama or fallout. Even the final hurdle—Mare leaving briefly for Chicago to finish her book—felt low stakes since they both explicitly stated they’d find their way back to each other before she left. I kept waiting for something big to happen, but it never really came.
That being said, I still enjoyed the story. The small-town vibes were cozy and immersive, and I found myself invested in Mare and Cade’s journey. While this may not be a book I’ll reread, I’m definitely curious to see where Kat Singleton takes this series. Hopefully, the next book will bring a little more tension and higher stakes with a new set of characters.

This was such a tension-filled and emotional rollercoaster of a romance. Its beautifully crafted to suck you in and make you feel their intangible connection that as much as they fight they can never really break. The chemistry between Cade and Goldie is undeniable and their journey navigating through their past trauma to finding a hopeful future where they choose each other is emotional but satisfying in the end.
Their stubbornness to sacrifice for one another is a testament to their deep-rooted love for one another and that fire is the ignitor for their passion as well. When they burn, they burn bright and hot, and that can be beautiful and frightening at the same time. Because of that fire, they have burned each other before, and this second chance gives them the opportunity to navigate through forgiveness which allows them the space to come together and rekindle that fire that drives them together.
