About this listen

In a Sweden wracked by war and haunted by folk stories so dark they can only be spoken of in whispers, Helvig has been raised by her brigand father to steal whatever treasure catches her eye. When her men ambush a strange girl on the road with hair pale as death and a crow perched on her shoulder, Helvig cannot resist bringing home a truly unique prize: a genuine witch.

Drawn irresistibly into the other woman's web, Helvig soon learns of Gerda's reason for walking the icy border roads alone: to find the queen who lives at the top of the world and kill her. Anyone else would be smart enough not to believe a children's story, but Helvig is plagued by enchantments of her own, and struggles to guard the sins of her past while growing closer to the other woman.

As Christmastide gives way to the thin-veiled days when ghosts are at their most vengeful, the two women will find themselves on a journey to a final confrontation that will either redeem them or destroy them entirely.

Contains mature themes.

At Least I Got to Listen to Abby Craden

the story was just ok with me. wanted to like it more, but can't give it more than 4 stars. Abby Craden is the main reason I purchased the audiobook. not exactly a steamy love story. main characters were younger and one was sort of a witch... interesting listen overall.

Great protagonist

Enthralling storyline and excellent narration. The protagonist depicts longing and possessiveness quite realistically. A very large detractor for myself though and my jaded southern US upbringing. It feels to me like our lgbtq community has had enough christianity and I’m personally not a fan of it rearing its head in my fantasy reading. I would have gladly given the book at least four stars without the satan, christ puritanical speak. Otherwise a great book and I would enjoy more.

Pleasantly Surprised

I was biding time until “Snow Falls” was released and was itching for something new so I decided to try out this book. I was reluctant b/c I’ve never heard of the author and I wasn’t sure about the subject matter, but once again, because it was narrated by the Great Abby Craden, I took a chance on it and I’m very glad I did!

I am actually quite surprised that this book hasn’t gained more attention. It is very well written and has the kind of sweet nuance and delicate looks that I absolutely love in romance novels. Both MC’s are relatable and lovable and the supporting characters have unique personalities that make them interesting and likable. It was intriguing and suspenseful and there were many moments that had me on the edge of my seat. Towards the end I was worried that it wouldn’t end well (I hate tragic endings) but I got my happy ending so, crisis averted. That being said, I wish there was a little more to the ending. It would be great if there was a sequel.

Per usual, Queen Abby was brilliant in her narration. The way she played Gerda’s voice is so lovely and she always adds something so beautiful and intangible to these books. I’ll never tire of her voice.

This is a great listen and I would definitely recommend it.

Cozy FF slow burn for a chilly winter’s night

Charming mystery and cozy love story between brigand Helvig and her captive witch Greta. The mystery driving Greta had the feel of The Snow Queen or the vibe of The Bros Grimm. Any violence is very indirectly mentioned. The romance is full cozy, with only two kisses. The magic is extremely subtle.
Both the romance and the magical mystery are slow burns until the final half hour.

This felt similar to Uprooted or Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, except those books were more true to the dark, haunting tone of European folklore. Ultimately, this was on the mild and predictable side.

Addictive from chapter one

Abby Craden breathed some beautiful life into this already epic book. YA? Sure, but ya gotta put into perspective that this isn't GenZ YA. This reads like a GenX book. IYKYK. The plot is a delicate weave of some of the finest stories ever told. Twining in mythologies and fairytales, the author effortlessly paints a story you will not be able to put down. I listened to the audiobook- binged it hard over a weekend and have zero regrets for the lost sleep. I will be reading more by this author.
