Golden Boy meets his match...

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Spice: 🌶🌶.75
Heat/Angst: 🔥🔥🔥
Narrating: 🎧🎧🎧🎧

I'm so happy that I've finally started this series. After hearing so many great things about it I have to say this book started out with a bang! Jacks was such a golden boy and I love them in my hockey romance. J. Wilder did an amazing job with this book.

Tropes:
🏒 College Hockey Romance
💚 Golden Retriever × Nerdy Girl
🏒 Boy Obsessed/Possessive/Jealous
💚 Slow Burn
🏒 Friends w/ Benefits
💚 Found Family
🏒 He Falls First & Hard
💚 Tutor/Study Sessions

I have to say that I was pulling for this couple the entite time. Sidney had 5 rules when it came to guys and no dating or sleeping with hockey players was on it.

After having a rough life, Sidney never felt like she was important or #1 in anyone lives. She had goals and girl was going places, big places. Her father played in the NHL and was now a coach for it and he broke promise after promise to her. He never showed up, made excuses and always made sure to tell his daughter that was just how so hockey players were. He was a giant POS to treat her that way.

Jacks was the college hockey star and already signed to play for the NHL. He was in his senior year, and would soon be off living a life for his best friend. He was super smart and super gorgeous. Girls wanted him all the time. He lived a non-serious life because he knew he was leaving for Boston come graduation.

After meeting Sidney in a club one night, he was hooked. He wanted to hook up with her and the attraction was strong between them. Once she found out he played hockey, she told him the rules and backed away. Jacks considered that a challenge and wanted to break all her rules.

After finding out they attended the same college, they actually had a really tough class together. Jacks was getting an A and she really needed help in passing this class. He offered to help study with her and their attraction only grew.

The chemistry between these two were of the charts. They were like magnets always pulled towards one another. It started off as friends, and Jacks took what he could get but always knew he wanted more. He broke down her walls and her rules.

He fell hard and fast for her and wanted another life with her, but didn't know how that would work. They were both on different paths. She told him it had to end at graduation. Things happened out of their control and Jacks ended up making a mistake that cost them. Both were heartbroken and miserable. If only Jacks could make it right.

The narrating was good. I thought the girl doing Jacks voice made him sound a little slow, but both her and the guy narrator did a good job. Not the best I've heard, but definitely not the worst.

I would have liked to have heard more on Sidney's mom, but it was never spoken about. Nor how Sidney got her scar. Jacks brought up wanting to know about it in his mind and kissing/licking it, but he never asked and she never told. I feel a few things should have been described more, or they left them out for later on that should have been mentioned. A very great read, though and I can't wait to read the next ones in this series.

Jax is a good guy

3.5 ⭐️ I really enjoyed the writing. This is my first book by this author. There was emotional tension, plot tension, and sexual tension. The ending felt very rushed. All in all, I’d recommend it to anyone that likes this type of book. There is an extended epilogue in ebook version that’s not in audio.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Boy obsessed? I’m obsessed.
Girls got daddy issues and not in a good way. But she’s letting it interfere with what could be and that just made me so angry! I was shouting “he’s not your dad” but too many parallels I guess.
Anyhoo I’m going to need a Mia/Alex/River story asap

Loved this Hockey Romance!

This remains one of my favorite hockey romances. It’s very angsty throughout, and has a hell of a third act breakup, but the sweet, sweet HEA makes up for it in the end.

While it’s the first book released in the Rule Breaker series, I would recommend reading/listening to Rules of the Game first for keeping on timeline.

Read Second

This book should have been the second in the series. The second book should be read first. I didn’t think this book was very good until I read the second book. I read this one again after reading the second book, and it was so much better knowing the back story.

New to me author

I really enjoyed this audiobook and story! The journey of our two MCs coming together was so sweet and wholesome. The third act was heart wrenching but worth it for the end.

The Story Was Great But The Audio Made It That Much Better

The first time I tried to read this book, I actually gave up on it. Not sure if I just wasn’t in the right headspace or what, but I struggled to get into it. Listening to it in audiobook form? I was hooked from the first chapter. Nikki and Edward brought Syd and Jax to life in a way that had me invested in their romance and rooting for their happiness.

Love the twist totally thought it was going to end differently.

I liked the characters a lot. Felt like there was a few chapters that just jumped around but overall loved the book.

Don't forget to characterize the heroine

Jax sees Sidney and falls, but Sidney is reluctant and has daddy issues. They both connect over being driven, experiencing a death of a loved one, and just plain attraction. However, Sidney just can't give all the way in and the push and pull is a game of hearts that Jax has to decide if he can play til the end.

I didn't get mad at Sidney and didn't feel like she should just give in, though I had hang-ups about how both she and Jax went about their problems. In all, it was a decent college, NA read, with Jax being semi-swoony and Sidney being bland, but genuine; that is, she is cheated by not being characterized past her insecurities and hurt, and not given enough word time on her dreams of being a politician. Maybe if that had been developed more, some scenes would have felt more poignant.

Cookie cutter plot and NA archetypes are present, like in any other dime-a-dozen college romance/hockey romance books. This couple's spice was 🌶 🌶, with Jax being a young budding dirty talker ...a lil' bit.
