About this listen

Step into the twisted universe of The King of the Peso, a pioneering Original series that blends intense storytelling with unparalleled immersion into a world of corruption on both sides of the border. Picho, voiced by the sagacious Harvey Guillén, serves as our guide through the intricate tapestry of frauds woven by his intimidating con man of a father, Pietro La Greca, played with captivating charm by the one and only Peter Stormare. Pietro, our suave protagonist, moves from one con to another, finally running Mexico’s biggest money-laundering scheme during the worst economic period in the country’s history. From the beginning, Pietro is on a relentless quest for power, marrying into a Mexican dynasty for some extra spice and, he hopes, wealth beyond his wildest dreams. Maya, brought to life by the elegant Teresa Ruiz, is blissfully unaware she's the leading lady in the plot and becomes the unsuspecting heiress to both love and deception. Add in her social-butterfly brother Nando, played by the brilliant Alejandro Edda, and her powerful border-controlling father, Don Fernando, together with 30 other actors, and you have a sometimes humorous, often dark, odyssey through ambition, crime, deceit, and the unrelenting pursuit of the American dream, as The King of the Peso unfolds like a Tarantino movie. Based on the memoir Pesos: The Rise and Fall of a Border Family by Pietro La Greca Jr. (a.k.a. Picho), this is a multigenerational story of loyalty, power, betrayal, and love.

A Spectacular immersive powder keg of a podcast

Dear Listener: As a producer on this project, I might be biased, but I must share my total admiration for Louise Abbou’s storytelling and audio artistry. Years ago, after experiencing her work, I immediately invited her to collaborate. When I sat down in Los Angeles with Pietro La Greca and John Rogers, Pietro’s narrative captivated me. I immediately recognized the potential for a multi-layered auditory experience, and I’m thrilled we’ve achieved that and more.

In this podcast, Louise masterfully orchestrates a diverse array of voices, enhancing Pietro’s compelling true crime story into something more… something rarely done with podcasts.

As a Mexican artist and producer, I see parallels to the ‘Wild West’ allure found in films like The Wolf of Wall Street, The Godfather, and The Big Short. However, this podcast transcends those comparisons, immersing listeners in a vivid journey through time, place, and emotion. Each listen reveals new facets, making the experience continually enriching.

My deepest gratitude to Louise, Pietro, John, and Lisa Gallagher and the cast and production team for bringing this project to fruition.

To all prospective listeners: prepare for an emotional journey that intertwines a father-son relationship with the addictive nature of true crime, exposing the universal darkness and unbridled quest for power. What begins as an intimate family tale escalates into a staggering corruption scandal, among the most significant in the Americas. Engage your imagination; this podcast is a brilliant ride.

Enjoyed this story very much, interesting family. Will probably listen to it again. Would have liked more specifics on more events. And an easier to follow time-line.
