Publisher's summary

When the mark of the great warhammer Aegis-fang is found branded on the back of a vicious outlaw, Drizzt can no longer merely hope that Wulfgar is safe. The dark elf and his companions set out to find the barbarian once and for all. As they discover pieces of the puzzle their friend's life has become, Drizzt grows only more determined to locate him. As his friends search for him, Wulfgar sails with Captain Deudermont in search of the stolen Aegis-fang, now in the hands of the vile pirate Sheila Kree. But the pirate isn't willing to sit around waiting to be caught. She has other plans. Drizzt, Cattie-brie, Regis, Bruenor, and Wulfgar - the Companions of the Hall - come together for the first time since The Silent Blade in a reunion filled with discovery and adventure.

Pretty standard for a book in the Drizzt series

This one is a pretty standard book in the Legend of Drizzt. But it's one we had to have to move the plot of the series on to where it needs to be.

It’s always good to be with Drizzt and his companions in action keeping Faerun safe from the monsters. It’s especially nice to have Drizzt himself back on the scene again. Especially since there is a new Elf assassin wannabe who is specifically targeting Drizzt.

Drizzt, Breuner, Cattie-brie, and Regis are in search of Aegis Fang, hoping the return of his fabled hammer will help bring Wulfgar back to himself. To find it, they have to find and defeat the dangerous female pirate, Sheila Kree.

Wulfgar himself, meanwhile, has made a lot of progress since he parted with his friends. At the beginning of this book, he is sailing with Captain Duedermont looking for Sheila Kree and her pirates. He engages in some risky behavior that causes the ship’s wizard, Robeillard, to recommend that he not be invited back for their next trip. But then, once they are back in Waterdeep, Robeillard, having found out that the companions are on their way to do battle with Sheila Kree, offers to help him find them in time for the final battle.

There are, of course, plenty of fight scenes. Sheila has some ogre allies who are particularly obliging in this regard. There are only two small twists in this plot. One is the surface elf who seems so bent on destroying Drizzt. There may have been a cameo of this elf in a previous book, but it was never clear where they came from, and it isn’t until after Drizzt has defeated him that this is made clear.

The other thing, that nobody much notices, is that Regis suddenly seems much bolder than he has ever been before. What is up with that?

getting a bit long winded

its good light non thinking reading, but the fact there is always a way to bring one of the wounded friends back to lifehas a feel a lot like playing a game
