Publisher's summary

"It is my feeling that debilitating shame and guilt are at the root of all dysfunctions in families," says Jane Middelton-Moz.

A few common characteristics of adults shamed in childhood:

  • You may suffer extreme shyness, embarrassment and feelings of being inferior to others.
  • You don't believe you make mistakes, you believe you are a mistake.
  • You feel controlled from the outside and from within.
  • You feel that normal spontaneous expression is blocked.
  • You may suffer from debilitating guilt; you apologize constantly.
  • You have little sense of emotional boundaries; you feel constantly violated by others; you frequently build false boundaries.

If you see yourself in any of these characteristics, you can learn how shame keeps you from being the person you were born to be and how to change that. Shame & Guilt describes how debilitating shame is created and fostered in childhood and how it manifests itself in adulthood and in intimate relationships. Through the use of myths and fairytales to portray different shaming environments, Dr. Middelton-Moz allows you to reach the shamed child within you and to add clarity to what could be difficult concepts.

Opened my eyes

Terrific clarity in describing the characteristics of shame, how it is created, how we manifest it in our lives, how it shuts us away from living our lives. More how to clear out shame would be excellent.

Great Book

If you could sum up Shame & Guilt in three words, what would they be?

"Eye" or shall I say "ear" opening read! Jane Middleton-Moz really is able to explain what shame really is.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shame & Guilt?

I like they way she explains the elements of shame by using fairy tales.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked the story of Perfect and the Giant.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Knowing I was not alone.

Helped me in one sitting!

This topic is something far too many people deal with at varying levels in life. I highly recommend this book to anything who wants to feel more enabled to craft the life they choose rather than be defined by past trauma or circumstances... and to anyone else a beating heart and either eyes or ears to receive this content :)

Its OK

Would you consider the audio edition of Shame & Guilt to be better than the print version?

The overall message is good but too much story telling really feels like a waste of time considering it does not really add too much to the impact of the story. Overall, the book can benefit from being shortened. It is also probably good for less mature audiences such as young adults.

take a chance to see how this can change your life

it was a great experience to listen to this book with my wife. Even though we both are in therapy shame and guilt needs to be explained and this does an excellent job.
