Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

This book was suggested by my therapist. It's pretty deep and heady. At times I wished the author would speak more to the regular fellow vs the psychologist, but still a great read.

Must have book, deep read

Before there was Brene Brown, there was John Bradshaw. Brilliant, humble, nurturing and honest, this book, over the years, continues to enlighten and comfort. True adulthood comes from an honest and thorough examination of our inner selves. A must read for a world that is teetering on the edge of self destruction.

even the chapters that didn't apply to me had insight to my behavioral actions. it was a great listen. the last few chapters are mostly meditations which need more attention than during a drive or at work.

very insightful to my childhood and inner thinking

Very insightful book! I really enjoyed it as it makes you consider the many ways we set ourselves up for hardships based on how we were raised and the traumas that constitute human life.

From someone who has dealt with shame, anxiety, self love and has come a long way on my healing journey towards enlightenment. I highly recommend this book! It’s a great book to start with or a book to soak up at any point in your journey. The author has tools, stories, and good delivery.
