We Are Enough: Engaging with the World from a Place of Worthiness

What does it take to be secure in our sense of belonging and self-worth? We may hustle to attain this security through achievements, meeting expectations, or repeating affirmations to ourselves - but Dr. Brené Brown's research has shown there is ultimately one obstacle to our sense of worthiness. “Shame is the barrier,” she teaches, “and building shame resilience is how we overcome it.” With Men, Women, and Worthiness, Dr. Brown draws upon more than 12 years of investigation to reveal how we can disarm the influence of shame to cultivate a life of greater courage, joy, and love. In this rich and heartfelt examination of this pivotal element of happiness, she invites you to explore:

  • The differences and similarities between the experience of shame for men and women.
  • Guilt vs. shame - why one is a useful force for growth, while the other keeps us small.
  • The four elements of shame resilience - identifying our triggers, practicing critical awareness, sharing our story, and speaking honestly about shame.
  • Empathy as the primary antidote to shame.

“Whether you are a man, woman, or child, every one of us has the irreducible need for love and belonging,” Dr. Brown teaches. “A sense of self-worth, unhindered by the inner voices of shame, allows us to meet that need.” With the warmth, candor, and humor that has made her a celebrated speaker, Brené Brown offers a road map for navigating the emotions that hold us back-so we can cultivate a life of authenticity and connection.

Powerfully perceptive and fully of moments where the listener will say "ah-hah, yes that's my experience"

Brené Brown is an amazing storyteller. It felt as though she were in the room with me patiently explaining her research. I really appreciate that she narrated her work.
The concepts she covers are universal and I truly believe anyone could learn and grow from this book.

Fantastic!!!

Amazingly in touch. Freeing, insightful, life changing. Really opened my eyes as a man, how the world gives us things that just are not true.

Great Introduction to Shame

Brent Brown is a great story teller and makes the concept of shame very relevant. Great book as an introduction to shame and how it manifests itself in a paradigm of binary genders.

Absolutely friggin' brilliant!

Within the 1st 20 minutes of this book, the author named the core of my major issue. She then went on to explain how it works against me in my life.... like she's been sitting over my shoulders for the last 4 decades. She then moves into strategies to help to transition you out of that 'shame' space. If you're a man or there is one in your life that you care about, this could be a watershed book.... it was for me.

Great as an introduction to shame.

She is a delightful narrator. It feels like an authentic conversation and not a book, and I really got the sense that she was speaking right to me. This is a un- intimidating easy to understand introduction to shame and guilt. I had some thoughts with the gender assignments that all women feel shame this way and men feel it that way, because for me as a female I identified with the male form of shame much much more. At the end of the book one of her solutions for creating shame resilience is to create empathy. To do so you should have friends (or at least 1 friend) that you trust deeply, so that you can share your shame to them when you are in crisis or needing help. This friend will turn around and give you empathy which then kills the shame. For me, I found this to be a let down. I take it as I have to make this kind of friend before I can begin healing shame. Which is largely disappointing and feels like to qualify for empathy support you must find it externally with someone else. I would have suggested that if you don't have this support system you CAN rely on yourself. Self compassion, self love and self empathy can be grown in many ways such as through journaling, meditation, a form of physical movement, and being open to learning more about self love. Of course it's nice to have friends or family that you can count on, but at the end of the day you are the only one who will always be with you and your own self love is all that matters.
