About this listen

Mataio (Matt) Faafetai Malietoa Brown offers the men in his barbershop a haircut with a difference: a safe space to be seen and heard without judgement.

As the creator of My Fathers Barbers, Matt has inspired a new generation of New Zealand men to break free from the cycle of abuse - and those men have in turn inspired Matt and his wife, Sarah, to create the global anti-violence movement She Is Not Your Rehab.

In this book, Matt shares his own story and those of his clients: how they survived family violence and abuse, and how they were able to find healing and turn their lives around. He introduces the people and concepts that have helped him heal and gives listeners the tools they need to begin their own journeys.

She is Not Your Rehab demonstrates the power of vulnerability and honesty in addressing pain and shame, and shows how anyone can empower themselves by taking responsibility for their own healing.

Truly one of the best books I’ve ever listened to or read. I was captivated by every single chapter and have now passed it on to those closest to me in my life. This is a must read for anyone as we can all learn something from the author’s journey to healing, no matter what our childhoods and life circumstances have presented to us. Thank you, Matt Brown, for sharing your story and giving us all the gift of this book.

This book is incredible. I hope to be the kind of father one day that can pass on the messages in this book through example. I think any one would greatly benefit from reading this book, but especially men. If you only read 100 books in your life, make sure this one is on the list.

A must read for EVERY man

This should be called “they” are not your rehab. Because honestly, as a woman writing this review I can tell you that I found this book relevant and powerful. Not just to understand my partner and his burden but to also recognize my own.

I would say it’s impossible to get to the end of this book without having learned something about yourself or another. At times it was difficult to hear but I found those were the parts I need to listen to the closest.

If you’re interested in change I’d say this is a nice, straightforward place to start that journey.

Much thanks. <3

This hits home so much. The issues that are addressed are shocking but they're also no surprise to me either, being a Pacific Islander growing up in NZ. It was even that much more personal having Matt read the book himself. At first I didn't realise this book targets a male audience, however, it didn't stop me as a female, to reflect on some of the traumas that I face within a relationship. 10/10, would read again and I'm at some point going to purchase a hardcover too just to have in the collection.

Comes at a time when there are needed resources for men! But there is also great advice for women! Very inspiring! I hope many find his words and kindness to be a healing balm.

Very Good Healing Resource

So true. This book speaks to why men mistreat women. Hiding all emotions with anger. Lack of proper coping mechanisms leads to generations of abuse and broken homes.

Amazing

I appreciated Matt's openness and genuine approach to such a difficult topic. He is especially skilled at taking each topic and weaving together expert knowledge with his excperiences in a way that feels approachable, accessible, and applicable to a wide spectrum of individuals. I was engaged from beginning to end. What an unexpected treasure!
