There are no heroes in Wichita…
The heroes Terry Fairway once idolized have turned against him, hunting him down at every turn. His grandfather, the ruthless S-ranked necromancer who rules the city, watches from his throne as the people starve and suffer. Vampires stalk the streets unchecked, feeding on the innocent without fear of reprisal.
Terry always believed his family were the good guys, but Wichita isn't a city of heroes or villains—it's a city of power. And if power is all that matters, then power is what Terry will seize.
He’ll become powerful enough to drive the vampires from the shadows. Powerful enough to feed the hungry and defend the downtrodden. Powerful enough to challenge his grandfather and bring hope to a city drowning in darkness.
Because even in the deepest black, a single light can spark a revolution. And Terry's ready to burn bright.
Or burn it all to the ground trying.

Every time the MC seems to want to stand on business the author makes the ground shaky as hell. it's good to show that sometimes your understanding of the situation isn't always black and white but when it happens every time?! it's a little annoying especially with the mc always going back on what he just said he'd do.
I thought I was going to get an anti hero boy against false heroes story, what i got was a false hero that could never take a hardline stance on anything
no standing on business here

Good narration.
Great story.
Worth the credit or money.
Now... for my actual thoughts.
People get "Super" or "Meta" stories wrong all the time. Its a really hard genre to get right in my opinion. Tropes are a thing that you have use... but its so easy for them to totally ruin your story. If youre able to use them, but not let them dictate your characters mind/ actions, then that is where the Goods are. Even if you do good character building it won't matter... it wont matter if you cant build a world that holds the readers attention. If you can do THAT as well... well then, you got the Greats.
In my opinion... this story has the Greats. Well... hes like 98% there. As long as Terry is able to become a powerhouse, and also learn to forgive his friends, family, and mentors. To me its looking like they HAD to do the things they did. Its also up to us, the readers, to remember that Terry is still a kid. An idiot. All teenagers are idiots. Thems the facts. Though when they are raised in such a survive or die type world... those idiotic tendencies tend to wear off quicker due to our ability to adapt.
Either way... the author did a GREAT freakin job building this story. I just hope he continues the same way. Because there are books where I've been let down... though theyre rare. For example... "Jakes Magical Market."
That first book... It is soo good. I mean there was some amazing character growth and the world(s) was engaging and wild. Sigh... then the 2nd finally comes out... and every single CENT of that growth went right out the effin window. Just depressing. Waited so long for that sequel and was utterly bummed an hour into the book. Made it to like 80% of the book to try to give the guy a real chance and it just got even worse.
As for THIS series from what I've seen on some of the reviews for the 2nd book (on Kindle) its looking like Dunning doesn't disappoint on book 2. Unfortunately my eyes are no good anymore so I HAVE to wait for the audio. I have a lot of hope and faith its going to be good though. A lot of people seem to think its a great continuation... and if that's the case it'll be so awesome to have another Super/Meta series to put next to Superpowereds, Grimnoir Chronicles, Steelheart, Villains Code, etc on my metaphorical book shelf.
Never heard of this writer until I seen this book... so im happy. Its very much worth the money. Even more so, the Time. Thank you for the wonderful escape hatch Dunning. Really. Thanks man
Wasn't expecting much... Haven't been so wrong in a long time.
