About this listen

Mercy Alston knows the best thing to do with pesky feelings like "love" and "hope": avoid them at all costs. Serving as a maid to Eliza Hamilton, and an assistant in the woman's stubborn desire to preserve her late husband's legacy, has driven that point home for Mercy - as did her own previous heartbreaks.

When Andromeda Stiel shows up at Hamilton Grange for an interview in her grandfather's stead, Mercy's resolution to live a quiet, pain-free life is tested by the beautiful, flirtatious, and entirely overwhelming dressmaker.

Andromeda has staid Mercy reconsidering her worldview, but neither is prepared for love - or for what happens when it's not enough.

This is an angsty but fluffy F/F novella with a happy ending for both of our intrepid heroines.

This is my first book from this author. It certainly won’t be my last!

TCBE is a cute little story that is quite interesting. It stars 2 very intriguing characters, and I wanted to spend more time with them!! Honestly, it’s stories like this that make me shy away from novellas. I wanted more story, more scenes with these fascinating characters and more time in this world AC created. I wanted to hear about the costumes Andromeda ultimately created and the eventual tenants of the rooming house. Maybe experience a play with the MC for the first time.
Perhaps AC will give us another (FULL LENGTH) story in this world featuring some of the characters Mercy and Andromeda encounter. 🤞🏾 PLEASE PLEASE!!! We need more quality stories starring African American women. 🙏🏾 Especially of the queer bent...

As for the narrator, it took me a minute to get on board with her. At first I thought her voice was a little too mature sounding for Mercy’s character, although I thought she was perfectly fine for Andromeda’s-given her personality, but she grew on me as I got lost in the story.

I definitely recommend this one, and I’ll be checking out other stories by AC!

WHY WHY WHY Isn’t This Longer??

It was my first time listening to her books and being a black lesbian, it was a cute little story and i want more. More of these types of books from her but longer.

Cute

This was a refreshing story to read, mostly because of its depiction of a woman, who is black, an entrepreneur AND a lesbian. Then, to make it even better, she is both out AND accepted by her community. I haven't come across this storyline before now and I must say, it filled me with pride because I share 3 of those 4 traits as well. I wish this story had been longer and dove more into the progress of Mercy's poetry and writing as well as the play she was working on and how she and Andromeda got on as Andromeda's stores flourished and she pursued more endeavors. Also, more of their interaction within the community that accepted them. Still, it was a good read and I'd definitely read it again. Thank you Alyssa Cole.

It was not enough, I wanted more!

It’s 1820. Mercy works as a housekeeper for the widowed Mrs Hamilton, who is fixated on preserving her late husband’s legacy. Mercy helps collect stories and reminisces about Hamilton and has instant and unwilling chemistry with successful seamstress Andromeda when she is invited by Mrs Hamilton to share stories of her grandfather’s experience in Hamilton’s battalion. Mercy has insulated herself from life after loosing both parents to yellow fever and having her last lover, Jane, choose marriage with a man over staying with her. Andromeda’s confident sensuality and exuberance gradually win thru Mercy’s caution. There is miscommunication and misunderstanding but everything works out. It’s a lovely little novella about love, forgiveness, confidence and the importance of embracing life.

Sweet early African American lesbian love story

Like most novellas I have issues with, I needed this longer! It would have been great to see a bit more time spent with the heroines, they had great chemistry and banter but it was so short!

Hamilton references galore, I should give it a rewatch.

Would have loved this to be a bit longer!

To consider the fear of what it must've been like for a female to be in love with another female in the 18th century . . . I can't imagine. It's already difficult being a black woman during that time period (despite being in the north). But to also be concerned that society will shun because of who you fall in love with, I can't imagine.

A good book.

This story though short was sweet. I loved every minute of it 😊. When I initially chose to listen to this book I didn't know what to expect the cover images simply caught my eye but I am happy to have stumbled upon it. The writing was beautiful and I loved the subtle address that was dropped throughout the storyline as well as the little snarky moments. I even took some notes

an unexpected surprise 😍
