Publisher's summary

A riveting new legal thriller from the bestselling author of My Sister's Grave.

In San Francisco's seamy Tenderloin district, a teenage street hustler has been murdered in a shelter for boys. And the dedicated priest who runs the struggling home stands accused. But despite damning evidence that he's a killer—and worse—Father Thomas Martin stands by his innocence. And attorney Peter Donley stands with him.

For three years Donley has cut his legal teeth in his uncle's tiny, no-frills firm, where people come before profits. Just as Donley is poised to move on to a lucrative dream job, the shocking case lands in his lap, and he must put his future on hold while putting his courtroom skills to the test. But a ruthless DA seeking headlines and a brutal homicide cop bent on vengeance have their own agendas. Now, as he unearths the dirty secrets surrounding the case, Donley must risk his neck to save his client's life...and expose the face of true evil.

Good story, good narration

If you like mysteries and procedurals with redemption as a subplot, read the 7th Canon. A new twist on a priest running a juvenile shelter, his arrest for murder, and good "bad boys". During the homicide investigation, parallel pasts of cops, lawyers, and politicians are revealed.

Legal Thriller 80's Blast from the Past

The narrator did a great job with the male characters but lacked a relatable female voice. The story starts, of course, with a brutal murder. Almost from the beginning, the reader knows who the murderer is but the challenge is following the process of capturing all of the criminals. An enjoyable read despite some predictable moments.

Stand Alone Published 2016 has Trunk Novel Feel

I stumbled upon Robert Dugoni with his skillful Tracy Crosswhite series. I pursued them after frustration finding a female protagonist that promised to hold my interest. They are skillfully executed and worth the Audible full price. I've enjoyed a few of his stand alones as well.

This 2016 stand alone has a strong hint of Baldacci's Lincoln Lawyer, but it is flabby and the structure timing is off. There are no blaring inconsistencies, no in your face errors of execution, but it lacks the professional arrow track of better offerings.

It was disappointing. I had to check the publication date thinking it was an early untried author's novel - it wasn't. if it had been, it could be used as a study work on how a young author overcomes failings in later books. But it's not. If it was an early work no one wanted, pulled out of the trunk or bottom drawer? Well, we deserved better from him.

Knuckle biter

Another great Robert Digoni book. I’d love to see a sequel to this book. The characters are so real and vividly described that I hate to say goodbye to the good guys.
The story took several unexpected turns including the finale.
