About this listen

An Amazon Charts, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal bestselling series.

An American operative in Russia is on the run for his life in a thriller of heart-stopping betrayal and international intrigue by the New York Times bestselling author of The Eighth Sister.

Betrayed by his own country and tried for treason, former spy Charles Jenkins survived an undercover Russian operation gone wrong. Exonerated, bitter, and safe, the retired family man is through with duplicitous spy games. Then he learns of a woman isolated in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison.

If it’s Paulina Ponomayova, the agent who sacrificed her life to save his, Jenkins can’t leave her behind. But there’s no guarantee it’s her. Or proof Paulina is still alive. To find out, Jenkins must return to Russia. Next move: blackmail Viktor Federov, a former Russian officer with his own ax to grind, into helping him infiltrate Lefortovo. The enemy who once pursued Jenkins across three continents is now the only man Jenkins can trust.

Every step of the way - from Moscow to Scandinavia to the open ocean - they’re hunted by a brutal Russian agent on a killer quest of his own. Out of loyalty to Paulina - dead or alive - Jenkins is putting everyone’s life on the line for a new mission that could be his last.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Edoardo Ballerini is a master at voices. For Jenkins, he creates a slightly easygoing manner, and for his CIA contact, a youngish-sounding voice. For the Russians, he uses a pitch range: rising for a scared but strong woman, dropping a bit for an agent helping Jenkins, and then lowering even further for an impatient, growling nemesis. He's consistent with all of them in this exciting cat-and-mouse adventure, which blends classic espionage and a mystery.” --AudioFile Magazine

“In bestseller Dugoni’s fast and furious sequel to 2019’s The Eighth Sister…Dugoni writes with such immediacy that readers will feel as if they’re standing alongside Jenkins as he contemplates his next death-defying move. Fans of espionage fiction are in for a high-octane thrill ride.” --Publishers Weekly

“All I can say is, wow. [Dugoni] knocked it way out of the park on this one.” --The Mountain Times

I started this book in the morning and didn’t put it down until the last word. I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next. I felt involved with the main characters and cared what happened to them. What more can you ask for. A day worth spending. Thanks Robert Dugoni. I’m greedy, I want more of these books.

I love this new series with Charles Jenkins and I'm glad that the book hinted at more books to come. Fast paced and perfectly narrated.

Couldn't put it down

Dugoni is a great writer and I have read many of his books but the central premise in this one is a bit silly. It feels like an excellent story (the first book) is being flogged. Trouble is, I guess once you’ve created such a great character you want to continue but in my opinion this wasn’t a great way to do it. If the next five books simply consist of more ridiculous ways for Charles to go to Russia and then escape I’ll probably avoid them.

Beyond belief. Not in a good way.

This is the second book in this series and they are both so heart stopping that you cannot put them down.

So Exciting!

I really enjoyed this book. The story was a continuation of book 1. I like the twists & turns. It did get tiring with all the Russian followed by translation. Although, I’m glad that they did translate. I’ve read books before that didn’t translate snd you had to figure out the content.
Overall, I would recommend this book and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Too much Russian

My Apple Watch alerted me that my heart rate was high three times when I was listening to this - sitting on my couch. Great writing, well-paced, and incredible characters. Narration is also amazing, and likely contributed to the tension I felt during certain scenes.

Edge of my seat!
