About this listen

With a cameo by Mindy Kaling, Regina Hall performs this captivating romantic comedy with a thrilling sci-fi twist!

Trinity Jordan leads a quiet, normal life: working from home for the Hive, a multifunctional government research center, and recovering from the incident that sent her into a tailspin. But the life she’s trying to rebuild is plagued by mishaps when Li Wei, her neighbor’s super sexy and super strange nephew, moves in and turns things upside down.

Li Wei’s behavior is downright odd—and the attraction building between them is even more so. When an emergency pulls his aunt away from the apartment complex, Trinity decides to keep an eye on him...and slowly discovers that nothing is what it seems. For one thing, Li Wei isn’t just the hot guy next door—he’s the hot A.I. next door. In fact, he’s so advanced that he blurs the line between man and machine. It’s up to Trinity to help him achieve his objective of learning to be human, but danger is mounting as they figure out whether he’s capable of the most illogical human behavior of all...falling in love.

About the Performer

A native of Washington, D.C., Regina Hall began her career in New York City where she studied English at Fordham University and received a Master’s degree from NYU in Journalism. She then studied at William Esper Studios in New York for two years, eventually landing her breakout role as Candy in Malcolm Lee’s debut film The Best Man. She would go on to reprise this role 14 years later in The Best Man Holiday.

Hall appeared in cult classics such as Love & Basketball, Paid In Full, and Malibu’s Most Wanted. In 2000, she filmed the first of four of the Scary Movie films and quickly became a fan favorite playing the outspoken and brazen, Brenda Meeks opposite Ana Farris and the Wayans brothers. In 2017, Regina was joined by legends Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and breakout star Tiffany Haddish in the raucous, blockbuster comedy Girls Trip. The summer hit grossed more than 140 million dollars becoming the first comedy of the year to surpass the 100 million dollar mark. It also became the first movie in history produced, written, directed, and starring African Americans to reach that milestone.

Next up was Andrew Bujalski's 2018 indie hit Support the Girls, which premiered at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX. Gaining the attention of film critics, her touching performance would earn her Gotham and Independent Spirit Award nominations as well as a spot on President Obama’s list of favorites for the year. In 2019, Regina became the first African-American actress to ever win a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for this role. Regina starred in The Hate U Give, a film adaptation of Angie Thomas' best-selling novel. She was in the film Little, which she also executive-produced. She stars opposite Don Cheadle and Andrew Rannells, on the Showtime dramedy Black Monday, executive-produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. She was seen on screen opposite Samuel L. Jackson in the Warner Bros film reboot, Shaft.

Love and Technology

I like the twist on this love story. The story line kept me guessing. I love the happy ending and the fact that Penny was given a body.

Blurred Reality

I listened to this in one day!!! The story had me hooked from the beginning. I totally thought it was going one way and that one thing was happening but found myself talking out loud to the characters. The performances connected me to the characters and I didn’t feel like they took away from the story. Trinity and Li has you hooked from the beginning you want them to find the truth, peace and happiness.

Enjoy every second!!

The story was short and sweet but also gave me what I want in a love and mystery novel all in one. I was saddened that the story ended, however, it was a good sad.

Love!!!!

I loved this book!! It was super entertaining and I loved the way the twist went. I had some suspicions but I couldn’t fully put it together and I absolutely loved it.

I am slightly confused about the voice of Penny though. Penny was voiced by Mindy Kaling but a lot of the times it was just the main characters saying Penny’s words. I think, if you have a specific person to narrate a character, then they should be the voice in every chapter. That continuously threw me off.

One of the best sci-fi romances out there

This was the book that got me hooked on sci-fi romance and I’ve been chasing the high ever since. It’s set in a futuristic society with a relationship between a human like sentient AI and a woman who’s having trouble remembering her past. This is a very easy entry point into sci-fi romance for those used to contemporary or other sub genres.

The story itself is so well written that it’s hard to believe this is only a novella. The world is so well built and the pacing doesn’t feel rushed at all. I loved everything about it and I think back to this book all the time. It jump started a love of cyborg/ai/robot romances for me. Listening to again in 2024, it’s still just as relevant and captivating as in 2019.

Narration: There’s a full cast, really bringing this to life and I’d highly recommend listening to it.

Still crossing my fingers for the next book in the series to come soon.
