About this listen

When night falls in Giger, Texas, shadows gather, as they always do in dim corners and other areas bereft of light. But this time they consolidate and attack any who tread too close. Michael Warren, a 24-year-old resident of Giger, finds himself at the epicenter of this horror and is stunned by the losses suffered overnight. Then the sun sets, and the shadows again coalesce, growing more aggressive, the darkness eviscerating anyone it touches.

His only weapon light, Michael struggles to survive and searches frantically for his girlfriend, aiding friends along the way. When Hurricane Daniel roars ashore, wind gusts shred trees and tear down power lines, plunging all of Southeastern Texas into blackness that only feeds and strengthens the encroaching darkness. Rising floodwater provides easy thoroughfares from which the darkness can strike as Michael and his friends contend with the elements, clash with criminals, and battle their way to his residence, where they will stand against the darkness and fight to survive.

Meh. Great narration for a not engaging book

The narrator brought a sinister tone to a novel that was more gory than scary. I am a big fan of horror and I think the narrator was excellent, but the story itself lacked any real suspense. I think Joe Solomon has promise but relies too much on gross out imagery rather than scenes to bring about coherent chills.

Not bad, at all.

This is basically "The Blob" with more details on how the characters try to survive faced with an absurd situation.
The sexual themes that some people can't handle is within the first hour or so.
I wasn't a fan either, but if you power through that, you will find a decent story.
Definitely worth a credit.

I hope Audible publishes this review...

I am not going to slam the author or anyone who said they liked this book... but I do think it is REALLY important that someone is allowed to say that this book is VERY heavy on sex, including graphic scenes with 16yr olds, and a pretty awful rape of a young girl by 3 men. (well, maybe the monster killed them before the other two were able to do anything I don't know becuase I simply could not listen one more second.) I felt sick and sad... not scared.
My sister and I choose a book and we listen to it at the same time. She had told me to get past the first 20 minutes, that it would be difficult, but worth it. That is when the horrible spidery thing with human teeth comes. TOTALLY excited for that. It was pretty difficult as I kept thinking but wait, these kids are 16! It really does read like some sort of kiddy porn. Not my thing. By the time I got through that part, I was feeling ok because the monster thing definitely had promise.
Then there was another sex scene. Then there is this incredibly awful scene where this really horrible guy rapes a 16yr old girl, in all sorts of ways.... I fast forwarded thinking ok I am not going to listen to this but maybe this guy is going to get all monstered up. I forwarded about 90 seconds and landed at the part where now this guys 2 friends are standing at the door naked and ready to take their turns.
That was it for me. There is no amount of scary, creepy, monster-y, worth listening through something like that. MAYBE the guys get killed horrifically and the author just REALLY wanted us to hate them... I for one will never know.
My sister also returned the book and wrote a review stating the issues with this book and she didn't get "published". I wen't back and looked at the reviews that have been and there is no mention of sex, rape.... I wouldn't have purchased this book if I had known... Audible you need to let people see these reviews. It really is quite disturbing.

So glad Audible allows returns

I was so excited about the premise of this book. But I could not get past the gratuitous, graphic, vulgar, and ridiculous descriptions of multiple scenes involving sexual excitement, sex, and what to me, pretty much amounts to the butt (and otherwise) rape of a 16 year old girl. The book starts with a party where some young people are doing what young people do... but the descriptions were way over the top. Lots of vulgar details... including pressing against someone so hard you could feel each individual pubic hair. WHAT?!?!? I soldered on. It got pretty good right after that, so I continued, excited about getting to the reason I got the book. But then it went right back into another sex scene between 2 consenting adults. Okay... rough isn't my style but it wasn't a show stopper. And here we are a few minutes later with the scene that ended it for me. I actually made it through the rape scene out of sheer disbelief at both the stupidity of the characters and a desire to get back to what I wanted to hear. But when the two naked male friends sporting ****-ons entered to take their turn on the 16 year old... I was out. I was only a little over an hour in... It was too much. Nothing could make listening to any more of this worth it. In my opinion, this book does not belong in horror, it belongs in porn... or maybe porn/horror which definitely seems to be a thing. I'm so glad Audible allows returns.
