About this listen

Arranged Marriage with a mystery

Phillip Watson, Earl of Arundel, is a lover of literature and music. Anyone viewing his family from the outside would think he lived a privileged life. But privilege comes with expectations, and Phillip finds himself engaged to a woman he never considered a match. Accepting his duty, Phillip agrees to the engagement until he nearly dies in an ill-fated accident and is left with amnesia.

Finding himself in an unfamiliar place, without knowledge of his duty or inheritance, Phillip falls for the lovely Miss Emma Parker. Her knowledge of Shakespeare and love of reading make her a perfect match. But when Phillip discovers he is engaged to marry another, and this engagement hinges on an ill-advised bet, he finds the consequences of ending the engagement to be harsher than a ruined reputation.

As Phillip's memories return, he knows it would be akin to death to marry where there is no love. Can he find a way to break the engagement without losing the bet for his father? Or will he adhere to the expectations of his station and marry out of duty?"

So Funny

This book actually made me laugh. Poor Phillip. He put up with so much. It’s so sad that he had to marry somebody who apparently hated him with a vengeance all because of a bet between their fathers. What I loved about this is the siblings who are watching this unfold with amusement. Of course, being siblings they have to tease him about the girl he has to marry who basically wants him dead. Ha ha.

There’s so many different twists in this story. The one thing that may be a trigger to some people is the physical abuse that the father does towards Phillip. If you’re one who has been abused physically, you might want to skip this one as it could be a trigger. I did enjoy the narrator, but Angela Johnson has chosen better voice actors. Still, there’s nothing that I could say bad about this book.

Why only 4 stars?

Well…. It was a very interesting mystery that I thought I figured out a couple times… only to be surprised. It kept me entertained and my mind only wandered a few times…

BUT!! You couldn’t and cannot gamble away your Title!! How bizarre! Some of the weirdness was distracting. But it was still good!

I had trouble telling who was speaking quite often. That’s on the narrator. It was ok, I didn’t mind listening, but the third time I had to scroll back to figure it out I was irritated!

It’s totally clean. There is no heat at all.

All in all I did enjoy it. The narrator was “ok”, but not great. The story was good, but often weird impossible details.
