Publisher's summary

“An extraordinary work of humane imagination...call it magic realism with soul.” (Locus)

“Finely honed...always engages and frequently surprises.” (New York Times Book Review)

A man risks his soul and his sanity to save his family from malevolent forces in this brilliant novel of horror and the supernatural from the award-winning pioneer of speculative fiction and author of the classic My Soul to Keep.

When Hilton was a boy, his grandmother sacrificed her life to save him from drowning. Thirty years later, he begins to suspect that he was never meant to survive that accident, and that dark forces are working to rectify that mistake.

When Hilton's wife, the only elected African American judge in Dade County, Florida, begins to receive racist hate mail from a man she once prosecuted, Hilton becomes obsessed with protecting his family. The demons lurking outside are matched by his internal terrors - macabre nightmares, more intense and disturbing than any he has ever experienced. Are these bizarre dreams the dark imaginings of a man losing his hold on sanity - or are they harbingers of terrible events to come?

As Hilton battles both the sociopath threatening to destroy his family and the even more terrifying enemy stalking his sleep, the line between reality and fantasy dissolves....

Chilling and utterly convincing, The Between is the haunting story of a man desperately trying to hold on to the people and life he loves as he slowly loses himself.

A great read

Such an original story, I was glued to this book the entire time! The detail described and the amount of effort put into the writing really makes you get in the head of Hilton. Just amazing.

Oh Lord, this book had me holding my breath!

I started this book yesterday, after having it in my 'to be read list' for months. I listened to it until late last night while feeling tense, not knowing how it would end. I fell asleep as it continued playing with about 3 hours left. I had the wildest dream while unconsciously listening that took the story and twisted it into my own demented adventure. I woke early and started back to where I fell asleep. That ending! I'm going to chew on this story for a while.
The writing was fantastic and took me back to my 80s childhood, living in a small town with small mind beliefs. The whole country seemed to have a small town belief system back then. I remember these things happening and see other forms of those things happening today. The setting on top of the story line increased the tension and suspense.
The narration was marvelous and increased the emotional and psychological effect of the story.
This is a brilliant five star novel.

Not only was a story amazing so two was the narration. This was one of the most intense and enjoyable audiobooks I’ve ever heard! I strongly recommend. It is so engrossing and well written. I am going to download another one of Due’s books right now.

Fantastic book

Great narrator. Slow build of a book. A different type of horror. Psychological, folk tale, societal. Really well written and the slow building pace worked in the end.

Good Story

Outstanding job Tananarive Due... very well-written story. For me, I sometimes wonder if people who passed on wandering around between Life and Death. Kevin Kenery performed a great job with the narration of the story.

Disappointed

I was excited to listen to this one after hearing from the author and seeing the other “2” reviews. It was disappointing. I didn’t like the ending at all.
