About this listen

A former Medal of Valor winner, Minnesota detective Alexander Rupert is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. So when he's asked to look into the false identity of a car-accident victim named James Putnam, a man who in fact died 15 years earlier, Rupert sees a potentially big case and an opportunity to regain his respectability.

But the investigation puts him in the path of "the Beast", the nom de guerre of Drago Basta, a cunning veteran of the Balkan wars and a sociopath assassin who has been searching for Putnam for years. Putnam had something that Basta still wants. If Rupert's life was in shambles before, it's now also in danger. Threatened by the Beast and suspecting his wife of cheating, Rupert falls for the seductions of the dead man's former girlfriend. As he feels his life spinning out of control, his steadfast brother and fellow police detective Max may be Rupert's last hope.

it's a really great story. keeps your wanting more but some parts are way to much. could have avoided the gruesome description of some scenes and kept the same interest

Great Writter Meets Happy Listener

If you could sum up The Guise of Another in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing. Thought provoking. Likeable turns and twists. Enjoyed hearing every minute.

What other book might you compare The Guise of Another to and why?

A good story like an Archer story from years ago.

What does Jonathan Yen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great voice talent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. However this isn't reasonable.

Predictable and boring

I listen to about 2 audible a week. The books are predominantly mystery, crime and suspense. I frequently listen to books when I'm cooking, running or cleaning. With that said, this book took me a week to get through. I couldn't commit and found myself avoiding listening all together.

The book was dull and the characters were bland. The narrator inflection and range of voice was limited and at time off putting. The plot was predictable and I often found myself thinking that the book was completely unrealistic. I did enjoy the villain.

So sad this is my last Eskens book😪

I plowed through all of Allen’s books within the month. he is my new favorite author. Whatever shall I do without him and his narrator’s??? I have loved reading all of his books with their twists and turns and unexpected endings. I actually cried at the death of one of my favorite characters. It’s 2020 When will another book come out??? More please…

Good and frustrating

I enjoyed this story and liked the characters. In some parts it was frustrating. The narrator was very good. Overall I would recommend this audio. This is my second audio from Allen Esskins and I will get another. I like his writing style.

Actions of the bad guys never make sense.

For once I would like for the bad guy to just skip town. Don't try to kill everyone in sight and leave a trail of dead bodies back to himself. Just quit while he's ahead. Then you have to wonder about detectives that don't seem to take any notice of their surroundings. Or blab everything about an open investigation to someone that he isn't even sure is involved. And since when can "voicemails" be heard while being left. That part really got on my nerves because the author was already on overkill with the video surveillance then he just totally mixes up the technology? On top of the fact that that "voicemail" contained way too much information. If the assassin ( I use the term loosely) was smart, he could have just waited until they were all together and blown up the building since he wasn't the slightest bit concerned about discretion. The story was okay but I liked the first book better.
