About this listen

Bram Stoker award-winner Bentley Little cordially invites you to The Resort.

Welcome to The Reata, an exclusive spa isolated in the Arizona desert. Please ignore the strange employees and that unspeakable thing in the pool. And when guests start disappearing, pretend it isn't happening. Enjoy your stay, and relax. Oh...and lock yourself in after dark.

Opulent doesn't begin to describe the Arizona getaway where Lowell Thurman, his wife Rachel, and their three young sons have come for one glorious week. Everything at The Reata is perfect - although Rachel is a bit unnerved by the openly lustful gaze of one of the gardeners, something she doesn't mention to Lowell. Nor does he tell her about the frightening sensation he has in the pool of hands clutching at him, trying to pull him under. After all, when you're in paradise, a few glitches shouldn't spoil the fun.

But the good times come to a screeching halt, when, to the Thurmans' horror, guests begin to disappear. What's happening at the resort? Evil, ancient, and cruel. And unless they can stop it, the Thurmans will be forced to sacrifice at its altar....

Explicit violence.

Wow, very drawn out!

It reminded me of the Shining somewhat, which is not really a compliment since I know that story very well, and a combination of some others that I know. Would have been better for me if more original, especially considering the length.

TOO MUCH...

The story was a little too violent violent for me. Maybe the next one will be different.

Classic Bentley Little

If you’re not a fan of the grotesque, and horror do not listen. For those of us that love a good horror story this is for you. As a fan of Bentley Little I enjoyed every moment of this book. Even when I was grossed out that’s what makes horror so good.

lots of charcters

This book is a horror novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters. They twists and turns that go through the novel are great. I thought that the narrator was going to be boring but he was very suitable to the main character.

Great off season rates

I can't decide if I like this story but I could not stop listening to find out what happens next.
There are several memorable scenes. I did like what he said about horror stories and explanations and I still think most Scott Sigler, Paul Cooley, or Stephen King fans would like Bentley Little's books.
I like David Stifel for narration (but I was already bias form his work introducing me to the John Carter of Mars and Tarzan books).

Overall very good

I do enjoy this author's writing. I guess I can't say too much without it being a spoiler but did *not* like the ending.

He's the master of finding horror in the mundane.

In this one he goes straight at things we've all agreed not to think about.

The hospitality industry is on the outer edges of the social contract. Total strangers touch and prepare our food. Our possessions are left out, touched and moved by other strangers . And we trust minimum wage workers to make sure intimate areas, toilets and sheets are not teaming with unseen filth.

It's completely horrifying when you think about it. Of course, Little also includes his greatest hits, sex, violent tendencies and ghosts.

dark humor

I've always considered Littles writing more dark ironic humor than horror, due to his pointed blasting of traditional institutions. the characters act so bizarrely that it has to be interpreted as outlandish humor.

This book shouldve ended 6 chapters sooner

Good narration, very entertaining story. but the ending felt lazy while at the same time it just wouldnt be over. Too many characters at the end that were important, were barely mentioned until late.... some characters just sort of dropped off completely. Mysterious stranger warns a married couple to get out while they can... meanwhile we have no idea who he is, what happened to him or how he knew what he knew. You will be entertained by the first half this book..... but after that... good luck to you.

Kind of slow

Even though the story is slow, it is worth listening to it. It is a plot that I had never had in any other book
