Publisher's summary

Arlette Adair has always done what’s right. From the day she was born, she’s lived the life her parents forced upon her. Now, she’s stuck in a sparkless relationship and a job she never wanted. Her father's presidential campaign will forever root her in the world of politics that she’s trying to escape from.

Brooke Dawson has always made her own rules. She’s a struggling freelance artist by day and a catering bartender at night, but her heart is full...almost. When she picks up a bartending shift at a high-society party, she hopes to bring home enough money to pay her rent. She never expects to run into Arlette Adair: her former best friend, the girl she spent all of college secretly crushing on, and the one who got away.

Now face-to-face with their unresolved past, Arlette and Brooke quickly fall back into their old ways while dancing around the biggest question: Why hadn’t they fallen in love all those years ago?

Beautiful Story

This was a sweet beautiful story. The two main characters had tons of chemistry! The plot development was excellent. Drawing back five years to their college years to the present and rekindling their relationship and falling in love again. It was very well written and a very sweet ending. I wish I had a Grandpa Harry in my life. He was a wonderful character!

Lula Larkin was as usual, an excellent narrator!

Well done! More please!

All the feels

The characters were likeable and engaging. Good storyline and lots of evoked emotions. This book explores family dynamics and its implications as we learn about Arlette and Brooke. They were friends, and a little more, in college that have a falling out and run into each other 10+ years later. Their chemistry is obvious, but will past hurts stand in the way of possibility?
This is an engaging story that pulls at the heartstrings at times and also makes you smile.

Best of 2023

This is the best book I've read in 2023. It was a phenomenal book, filled with prose so beautiful, I could practically see the words dancing in my head. Staying with the artistic angle of the book, Miller's words effortlessly painted a tapestry of romance, angst, difficult family dynamics, and a second chance at love. She had me turning the page until my eyes grew bleary and shut on their own. Miller has always had a stunning way with words, but in this book, she knocked it out of the park. There is not a single scene is wasted or failed to move the story along. Everything is ultimately tied together. Even the mention in the first few pages of a certain little pest that would survive a nuclear winter is revisited in the last few pages with just a simple line. One of the things I truly appreciated about the way she told the story is that she clearly kept the characters’ respective ages in the forefront of her mind and decided against contriving a break-up/make-up situation for Arlette and Brook, nor did she unnecessarily revisit the immense difference in their upbringings, which could have easily bogged down the book. The characters communicated and acted like adults and when the ultimate flexion point determining what the future held in store for the, she handled it with maturity and grace.

Miller is a gifted and talented author who the sapphic lit community is lucky to have. I strongly, STRONGLY recommend this book. 5+ Stars.
