About this listen

A “sharp and funny romantic tale” (O, the Oprah Magazine) from the number one New York Times best-selling author of Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers and Apples Never Fall.

Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history. She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen wouldn’t mind a lasting one. When she meets Patrick, she’s optimistic. He’s attractive, single, employed, and best of all, he seems to like her back. Then comes that dreaded moment: He thinks they should have a talk.

Braced for the worst, Ellen is pleasantly surprised. It turns out that Patrick’s ex-girlfriend is stalking him. Ellen thinks, actually, that’s kind of interesting. She’s dating someone worth stalking. She’s intrigued by the woman’s motives. In fact, she’d even love to meet her.

Ellen doesn’t know it, but she already has.

not her best but still decent

I love Liane Moriarty and I loved the narration by Tamara Lovatt Smith, I also loved, The Husband's Secret and What Alice Forgot. This book was not as good as the other two but not without some entertainment value. The plot was predictable, not all the characters likeable and we had to hear endless psychoanalysis of each character. However, the narration made it all easy to listen to and it wasn't a total waste of my time. I am sure I would NOT have enjoyed reading this book, but to listen on the treadmill, it was fine. I wouldn't rush out and get this one but if you need to use a credit, its not a total waste.

I loved it!

I can’t get enough of Liane Moriarty! Sadly for me, I have now read all her books so I must wait for the next release – whenever that will be! I wish she’d hurry up already; I’m already impatient for the next one.

The plotlines in her books are always so complex and twisted… hard to describe! I wish I had a more intelligent review to post other than just: “I loved it!”

How to explain this story? Part page turner, part slice of life anecdote, part stalker-drama, part stream of conscious happenings … whatever you want to call it - I just loved it!

More please!

Too long and dragged out

I enjoyed the story to a point. I found that it dragged too long and became tedious towards the end. It could have used a good edit to remove the extra parts that weren't necessary. Took away from a decent story.

just ok

The plot was lacking and the character development was minimal. Not my favorite of her books.

Insightful and totally different

I never get tired of or am disappointed by Liane Moriarty's writing. She is diverse and thorough with character development and interesting with the plots. Seems like there is a bit of everyone in each of her characters which makes them easy to identify with.

This story centers around two women who love the same man from entirely different directions. I will read/listen to everything she writes and I highly recommend this one.

Pure fun!

Would you listen to The Hypnotist's Love Story again? Why?

I'm not a re-listener, but I truly did enjoy every minute of this book.

What did you like best about this story?

Ms. Moriarty creates such likable characters, with interesting jobs and lives. She's downright funny, but there were many poignant moments as well.

Have you listened to any of Tamara Lovatt Smith’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but would in a heartbeat after hearing her in this one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several - it was so easy to identify with the characters, each in a different way.

Listening to this book is like watching a 3d movie!

It never ceases to amaze me how creative this author
Is. The characters in this book truly become real. Your heart hurts when they do, bursts with love as if you are experiencing their emotions in the same situation. It’s easy to think of them as friends or fear them at times. I only wish I could write this review with the same eloquence the author lends to the creation of this masterpiece. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed with the experience of the journey this book takes you on.

Mild suspense. Fun romance.

I liked this book. Light enough for a vacation read, but still interesting. 4 stars.

Liane Moriarty is a genius

I adore Liane Moriarty. Her characters are always so rich and she develops them
So well. The stories always flow and I love how keenly she writes women, and the internal conflicts that at times plague our minds. She’s particularly good at writing flawed characters who are likable. The narration is always fantastic too. I don’t know if I’m just sweet on Australian accents (okay, yes i am...) but the performance is always excellent in her audible books. This one is no exception.
