Publisher's summary

Constance Verity has been saving the world since she was seven, and she's sick of it. She sets off on one last adventure to reset her destiny and become the one thing she's never been: ordinary.

Ever since she was granted a wish at birth by her fairy godmother, Constance Verity has become the world's great adventurer. She is a master of martial arts and a keen detective and possesses a collection of strange artifacts. Constance has spent the past 28 years saving the world, and she's tired of it. All she wants is to work in an office and date a nice, normal guy. And she's figured a way out.

The only problem is that saving the world is Constance's destiny. She's great at it, and there are forces at work to make sure she stays in the job.

Then again, it's also her destiny to have a glorious death.

Not his best work.

Narrator was good but the overall storyline just wasn't his best. Just a little disappointed.

Glad I Didn’t Look at The Reviews

Don’t listen to the reviewers who gave bad marks to this. It’s great! Really funny and I am hard to please with funny. I’m a woman and don’t take it lightly when a man doesn’t show respect so I loved this. Well done for the story and the performance!

Mediocre with some laughs

The narrator did a decent job with the voices, but I've been spoiled by the likes of Andrea Vernon and the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection and The Wandering Inn, so I was a little underwhelmed--a lot of the characters sound the same (making it a bit harder to follow dialogue), and especially the deep voice she does for male characters feel off. I do think she does a fun job with accents though.

For the story itself, I enjoyed the snark and the sidekicks, but I did not enjoy the relationship. The premise was fun, but I kept wanting Tia to get more screen time than Connie, especially at the end.

Funny and Irreverent

The narrator was spot-on; the story is funny and irreverent. Looking forward to the next one.

another good book

I have most of A. Lee Martinez audio books. I keep a look out for any new ones. This book is good. A little more serious but humor still present. It was fun seeing a non super hero at work. I do wish a little more detail about the fairy godmother could have been given. Cynthia Farrell does a good job. She is excellent as Connie and her friend. The male voices sounded a little too much alike. These are enjoyable characters in a good story.

not up to his usual standards

the last two books by this author have been nowhere near as good as his previous works. Nowhere near as funny, or is interesting or entertaining. If you're a big fan, you will still get something out of this. but don't go in expecting much.

Not just an adventure story—It's EVERY adventure

First off, the narrator gives a great performance, beautifully covering a wide range of characters of varying genders and species. She did an amazing job and was a sheer pleasure to listen to.

As for the novel itself, Martinez has this amazing talent at introducing the mundane into the fantastic. In this novel, he amps up the incredible by making a protagonist who has saved the world so many times that it's become a chore. Normalcy escapes her, but the extraordinary has become predictable.

It's a fun listen from start to finish, with enough character moments to keep this from becoming too silly or repetitive.
