About this listen

Welcome to Gil's All Night Diner, where zombie attacks are a regular occurrence and you never know what might be lurking in the freezer....

Duke and Earl are just passing through Rockwood county in their pick-up truck when they stop at the Diner for a quick bite to eat. They aren't planning to stick around-until Loretta, the eatery's owner, offers them $100 to take care of her zombie problem. Given that Duke is a werewolf and Earl's a vampire, this looks right up their alley. But the shambling dead are just the tip of a particularly spiky iceberg.

Seems someone's out to drive Loretta from the Diner, and more than willing to raise a little Hell on Earth if that's what it takes. Before Duke and Earl get to the bottom of the Diner's troubles, they'll run into such otherworldly complications as undead cattle, an amorous ghost, a jailbait sorceress, and the terrifying occult power of pig-latin. And maybe - just maybe - the End of the World, too.

Gory, sexy, and flat-out hilarious, Gil's All Fright Diner will tickle your funnybone - before ripping it out of its socket!

Since its release in 2016, Netflix’s original series Stranger Things has claimed both horror and sci-fi lovers' hearts with its supernatural shenanigans and charming cast of characters. With its deft use of tropes established by master storytellers like Stephen King and Steven Spielberg, this series was almost mathematically guaranteed to have mass appeal. Pluck up some courage, switch your bike into high gear, and scroll down—if you dare.

Not quite as good as the other A. Lee Martinez books, but the narrator is excellent.

If you could sum up Gil's All Fright Diner in three words, what would they be?

Fun, exciting and different

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gil's All Fright Diner?

The first meeting of Earl and Duke was great!

Any additional comments?

I've read a lot of vampire and werewolf novels, this one was very different than the norm. It had a great sense of humor and managed to show different takes on standard tropes.
If Anne Rice writes about white collar vampires and Charlene Harris writes about blue collar ones, then A. Lee Martinez is writing about redneck ones. It sounds odd, but it works.

A new take on the supernatural

I liked it.
The narrator is amazing and the story is funny and very lite.
Would recommend as a vacation to the mind from the real stuff in this category.

Real pulp science-fiction/fantasy

I laughed out loud several times. The characters were brought to life by the fantastic narration. Even the dead ones. I'll be doing several more A Lee Martinez books. Immediately.

superb

I am impressed. Listened to one of Martinez's other stories and found I liked it. Do enjoy the humorous turn to the story telling. Found the same level of humor to this story. Good job.

Pretty Good

Listen to this audio book for the voice actor, if anything. Aside from the fact that this is a great read that’s definitely a unique take on vampires, werewolves, and other super natural entities, the voice over is absolutely amazing. A literal work of art.

The voice actor did the MOST

Quirky and fun story that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Unique dark humor and surprisingly lovable characters all brought to life by an amazing performance by the reader.

Fast and fun!

Really enjoyed the story. The narrator was great and his tone and delivery definitely invoked a southwest atmosphere.
It would make a great movie as a humorous horror-mystery growing into a thrilling supernatural adventure. Without getting specific the character combination works as a buddy story, love story, and leads to the defeat of the villains.
This story line, after being brought to conclusion, could be turned into a TV buddy road show (episodic) where the characters travel from place to place dealing with supernatural adventures. I’d be a fan.

Characterizations

What made the experience of listening to Gil's All Fright Diner the most enjoyable?

The main character Earl and Duke, a redneck vampire and a trucker

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's a tough choice but I would go with Duke

What about Fred Berman’s performance did you like?

Definitely captures the voice of the main characters.

Any additional comments?

This book will not change your life or open up new vistas of understand to you but it is a lot of fun. There is a bit of a buffy/supernatural flare to this that has monsters with a very human personalities. They bicker, joke, just hang out and wandering through a weird town with a very weird diner. I could best describe this book as that filler episode on an action adventure TV show that turn out much better that it had any right to be because the writer was given free reign to just have fun. If you are looking for a light read this you can do a lot worse than this book.

Silly fun with likable mosters

It builds slowly with a dark and dry humor. At first I didn't like the "heroes" because they weren't hero-types. But... as it slowly built up the characters, I grew quite fond of them all, except the nasties. It does slowly progress as the story builds in anticipation of the final outcome then... the excrement hits the fan and it takes off in a whirl of a climax. I didn't know what would happen with soooooooo many plot twists and turns. The narrator was great doing all the voices and his pace slowed or quickened with each one. I forgot I was listening to one person read. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes "not your usual".
